Is there a common problem with uneven disc wear?

Picked up my 2011 4.4TDV8 last week and the front brakes squeal loudly when low speed braking.

There’s no brake wear light on, and the pads seem to have plenty of material left, so I’ve had a look over the disc surface and the outer is a lot higher than the rest of the disc with a noticeable step up.

Is it likely someone's fitted pads that are too small? I’ve read there are a fair few variations in Caliper size over the build years.

This is normal disc wear- possibly the previous owner hasn’t changed the discs as often as they should and just got away with new pads 2007 TDV8 Vogue SE

Sounds more likely to be the pad material and/or the pad backing plates - e.g. Mintex are notorious for being noisy, and if the back of the pads aren't greased properly, they can squeal too

N.B -

When I say the outer is higher, I’m not referring to the disc having a large lip, it’s the actual braking area/surface of the disk that has a step in it!

Weirdly, it doesn’t exhibit any other warped disc symptoms, no vibrations or wobbling under braking or high speed

There will be a minimum thickness stamped into the outside lip of the disc bell... Use some callipers and measure what thickness is left would be a good starting point...
But remember, you can't put a price on safety sir... If in doubt, id change them...

As above, if it were me I would be changing the discs / pads asap, if there is a step in the disc surface, then it will be useless fitting new pads. Whilst this is being done, also check the callipers in case this has been a possible cause of any problems.
If the discs are in such poor condition, then this could possible point to poor or inadequate maintenance in the past It only takes seconds to run your fingertip over the disc surface to carry out a rough check, but remember to do so when the discs are cool

I’m assuming getting some Genuine Pads from a Main Dealer costs the earth?
