Next up I thought I would sort the fog lights. Fairly common issue as you all know, foggy and cloudy generally looking tired. Let’s give them a clean up.

These are quick and easy to remove used a variety of products and methods but whilst I managed to improve them with removing the dirt on the inside lens, the outer lens has pitted from the heads of stone chips so replacements will be in order.

Encountered my first problem with the car, I jumped in it after a few days and got this error on the screen

With the Gap IID tool still on my shopping list, I popped the car on my Ctek charger to boost the battery and after checking with the engine running it was showing 14V via the “secret” menu on the infotainment screen. Phew! Hope the alternator is OK then.
I drove it to a friend with some diagnostic equipment locally,. cleared the fault codes and the error disappeared. Noting some of the codes down (there was obviously a lot of them being a Land Rover Laughing )

Drove the car home and it was fine for a day or two. Then the alarm would randomly be triggered, for no reason at all. A check online showed bonnet sensor to be the issue. It was hot and seemed a common thread with these. Ordered one from Land Rover(revision: longer switch pole) and swapped it over, didn’t fix the issue sadly, but that’s one preventative item done.

Bonus point was I had same issue with my E46 M3, I had disconnected the sensor to prevent accidental alarms and discovered the sensor was identical to the one out of the M3, so simply plugged the old one into the BMW and it’s worked fine ever since.

This then went on for weeks, trying to find a garage to take it in as my guy was booked up. Eventually it went in and the car was throwing error codes for door locks, giving this the cause for alarm triggers.

In true LR/RR fashion, this ultimately was all down to battery issues!! Incorrectly specced Lead Acid item removed, correct AGM item installed. The fault was traced (with the help of a thread on here) to a fault negative cable, containing the BMS which had corroded and gone bonkers. Genuine BMS ordered from Land Rover and installed. Problem solved.

Yep mine now does the same! It’s on my list to sort, had a look and seems a few people on here have experienced similar. It seems to disappear quite quickly so haven’t been in a huge rush. All gen LR parts for the pulleys/tensioners etc. thought it might be the alternator or A/C compressor

Did you replace all of them? There is one "top left" that is often missed and it's part of an alloy casting, LR022810 (Note that LR024791 is a pulley that also bolts to this casting).

The bearing that was shot on mine is part of the "bit" with 3 holes (technical speak) in it Laughing

Once that was replaced my squeak went and I sometimes (rarely) get a squeak now but usually on a damp day (damp belt I reckon). 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Interesting thanks DrRob, will keep in mind.

I have a friendly Tech (I’m in the industry) who I usually use as a priority, trouble is he is too good and usually busy!

Collection/loaner is a great find. Have some work to do soon so will keep in mind, appreciate the recommendation.

Missed the other post - I am 90% sure everything was replaced, but I will have to dig out the receipt to double check, it was reassuringly expensive as to be expected Laughing

Thought I would check the maf sensor on the donut, had heard they get covered in crap. Mine was gross and after cleaning this had improved low speed response from the engine/throttle.

As many others have done I fancied some of the chrome arm rest adjusters. Got some from AliExpress and was surprised at the quality having never ordered anything before.

After:

Just adds that little bit of an accent, surprised these were the same as the P38 ones my dad had on his 20 years ago, thought it let the interior down a little.

Brake Refurbishment

Noticed my near side front caliper was binding, the pads and discs although appearing not that old were not visibly in a good condition and I had a lot of squeaking as I pulled to a stop. Also the anodised coating had basically turned white and faded so visibly these were in appealing. So set about finding a spare set to refurbish. This proved pointless as they were nearly the same cost as a freshly refurbished set, ordered some off eBay and this turned into an unfortunate series of events. Won’t go into detail, but the Calipers in spite of being “refurbished” were of very poor quality, ended up sending them a more reputable company to get refinished again.

Photos aren’t the best, but you get the idea;

Brakes arrived (second attempt) Gloss black, with standard decals.

Decided to go with LR discs which were surprising value, courtesy of Robin at Duckworths. Pads were a crazy price so decided to get some Green Stuff SUV pads given their use of quality backing plates and positive experience with the yellows on my M3.

Fitting

All done (I also had rear pads swapped to green stuff to match as were bargain bin Brembo jobs from ECP)

Oil Cooler

After noticing an odd smell after some longer journeys I assumed I had a leak, some investigation on here showed that the likely culprit was the oil cooler. Decided to go this route anyhow as it’s preventative regardless. Ordered the viton seals and after a recommendation on here i went with a Nissens oil cooler. I was not able to get one from Land Rover!

Removal of the old unit showed the gaskets had begun to flatten, it had leaked but it wasn’t too bad. So all cleaned up and reassembled.

I also had the EGR pipe and “donut” plenum cleaned out of all the gunk as I sss different from a lot of low down hesitations. This has 100% cured this.

So the final two pieces of the puzzle.

As mentioned I had wanted to go back to the original Westie wheels. Something about a no side step, clean L322 on 20”s just sits right for me. Enjoyed the 22”s and I know not the target audience for it on here!) but I loved the shape on the l322, wanted to renew tyres so decided against paying over the odds for the big wheels.

Increasingly hard to find for some reason, I stumbled across a set that had just been refurbished on eBay and took a punt.

Then ordered me some of the Pirelli Scorpion Zero PCNS that seem to be so highly praised.

All fitted, I am over the moon with how good it looks. The drive had significantly improved as well, the overall car feeling much lighter. I did not experience a night/day revelation with ride quality as I had expected. But it’s great all round.

Planned to show the car some love with the DA after a thorough decontamination over the bank holiday weekend. Plans were slightly scuppered due to the ridiculous winds which was blowing a load of crap off my neighbours trees onto the car and into any buckets/mits I was using. Ended up spectacularly running out of time and patience. So ended up just doing a thorough Decon and a small spritz of Turtle wax si02 coating. Tested a few new products - Meguirs wash+ for the roof which is a shampoo with some mild abrasives, rejuvenated the roof!

Terrible pics as usual;
