The confusion, I suspect, results from different behaviour on earlier and later cars. As others have said, on a 4.4 you risk shutdown if you don't get it fixed. Presumably implemented in software to prevent upstream damage to other components.

On my 3.6 TDV8 the gauge started reading zero and as explained by others on here the car went into limp mode then shut itself off.
