We considered the ferry on our recent trip to Grenoble to pick up our Son but in the end decided the tunnel was so much easier, although relatively pricey this time.

Coming back last Monday was interesting though. There were some tunnel delays and the Calais terminal was rammed full of people returning from the 100th Le Mans 24hr. So many Ferrari's, Porsche's, couple of Bentley's - must have been easily several £million worth of very nice cars. 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

i saw that you had a euroland trip Rob...

although at times it can be boring the autoroutes are a pleasant drive down through France..

we plan to stop at le-mans to have a look round the track...did it last year and its only 3 euros .. ... - .- -.

Like the tunnel but the Newhaven - Dieppe ferry is more convenient for us. It is a four hour crossing but, having sailed the Atlantic and back, it’s usually a pleasant trip.

It has another advantage - there’s a 20% discount for over sixties.😁

Tunnel every time for me - my wife gets seasick on a lilo

If I was ferrying, it would have to save a significant drive (and then she'd fly), but I haven't been tempted. We have friends who do St Malo & others into Bilbao/Santander and find it much more convenient. They have LPG though, so can't use the tunnel anyway

@Alistair, i've always used the tunnel for the past 15 years but now our dog has passed we've decided to try the boat...
i dont think it would be used in the winter when we go to the xmas markets in Germany/Belgium.. ... - .- -.

our last ever ferry was Dieppe - Newhaven. As we got on, there were sick bags laid out on every table. Then the Captain announced that conditions in the Channel were 'far from ideal'. It's been the tunnel ever since

When we took the Ferry to Spain in 2019 there was a stop at Le-Harve to change crew it was so rough that it took over an hour to dock the Ferry. but then the Bay of Bisqe can be very harsh.

Well Stan to be fair they have very few crashes that have crashes or run aground so you should be ok

This post will be boring as hell, but will only take seconds to read -

Working at sea this will be standard practice for many, once you get to the area you will travel in or once you get to your cabin then spend a few minutes working out the escape route to the emergency muster areas, then walk that route a couple of times particularly if on an overnight ferry. Pay attentions to signs / instructions etc.
Same with staying in an hotel, I make sure I know exactly how to get to the fire escape from my room ie turn left or right from the room, how many doors to go through etc, without having to spend time thinking about it or looking for signs.

Chances of you needing to escape are quite rare nowadays especially in Northern Europe, but one never knows, it always pays to be prepared, especially when in an unfamiliar environment. OTT to some but five minutes or so checking these could save your life. Never ASSUME that someone will be there to guide you if the proverbial hits the fan.

I do not wish to increase any ones paranoia just to help make your holiday journeys safer and more enjoyable. Hope those sailing have a nice calm day.

no actually what you said is very relevant...my wife like you always notes where the fire escape is in every hotel we have stayed in...

Pricey? I would say so …. Gone are the pre covid frequent flyers for £40.00 plus £20.00 at peak , say £120.00 return.
Any train if they have space within a couple of hours of your booked time.

Just looking to book … normally I don’t travel at peak times, but needs must.

Seems they have a new man in , new pricing strategy.

Euro tunnel have now standard , exact time , semi standard +/- 2 hours , and rich class with the right to smack you for another £250.00 each way if they are busy. .

Also add in the FFRR surcharge £40.00 or so each way. ( I compared the same crossing using my wife’s BMW 4 registration ) THAT’s NEW (to me)


Before I add the dog I’m looking at £450/500 round trip…s . As fairly flexible & juggling times/dates I can get it down to £400.00

I need to persuade SWMBO we can leave the dog in the car for 1.5 hours on the ferry. Yes of course I can pay the price, I just don’t like being stiffed. Irish ferries are around half the price with the lounge.

Rant over….

Stan take the lounge option, well worth it. Enjoy.
