May be worth checking / cleaning the earth terminals located behind the front wheel arch liners - a few earth cables terminate here and due to the location, can suffer corrosion / bad earthing.

The liners are easy to remove, providing easy access to inspect 👍 Jonathan

The alternator is driven by an external belt. The timing chains are internal. While technically connected as part of the entire system, you cannot put an alternator out of timing alignment as it is not timed to the engine.

My alternator failed last year due to oil leaking into it from a valve cover leak. I was able to charge the main battery and drive it for about 15km before experiencing similar symptoms as you. It was a PHEV for a few weeks.

Perhaps the new alternator failed due to a similar issue as my 2013? Dan. 🇨🇦 2013 L405 5.0 SCV8

It could be a simple case of an incorrectly fitted connector. I imagine that to replace the alt you need to unplug and remove a few things first. If some of those connectors are not fully home you could get rough running. Things like camshaft sensors, manifold pressures etc etc all affect the timing and engine mgmt decisions, and even just one missing can be enough for it to throw a wobbly.

That being said engine diagnostics should pretty quickly show up issues as pointers to look for. V8 or else ...
