L322 5.0 timing chain tensioner replacement Essex/Suffolk

I’m becoming aware of a rattle from cold start so I’m guessing it’s time to do the chain tensioners. Something I’ve been dreading! My trusted independent LR garage haven’t ever done this job and are reluctant - does anyone have any recommendations for a specialist in Essex/Suffolk or indeed anywhere?! I know this is a common problem but struggling to find anyone advertising this service. Any pointers greatly appreciated!

Dartford transmissions mate. Indy land rover specialist. Obviously you can work out where they are based

I haven't used them personally, but similarly have hunted around the area just in case I ever ned my timing chains/guides done, and QP Online (https://www.facebook.com/qponlineltd/) seem to do some very good work on the 5.0 S/C engines, and loads of serious rebuilds for crank failures, etc., on other LR engines.

Hi mate I know this thread is a few years old but did you end up getting your chains done by dartford transmissions? Or by someone else? If so did you get someone to do it? Thanks

Mine thankfully haven't yet needed doing, but I think QP Online have now become https://4x4enginerebuilds.co.uk - they certainly seem to do this sort of thing all the time and have very good feedback, so they would be one of the options (along with Dartford Transmissions) that I'd be giving a call if/when I need it doing.

Thanks mate I’ve given 4x4 a ring and just sent and email to dartford transmissions and see what they say. Thanks

Do your chains/guides definitely need doing then, or you're just checking pricing for the future?

If you do get some quotes please let me know, as the prices for this job seem very variable!

Yh my chain’s definitely need doing pushing them down goes a bit but lifting the chain up a good 1/2 inch movement. I’m gonna check prices but if not I think I will end up doing it my self with all proper oem stuff. As I’ve checked just for the chains and stuff and they’re coming to £430 +spefico tools which are about £560. So I may have a go myself but will let you know

I’ve just ordered everything that’s needed to do the chains on my 5.0 from Duckworths today.

To do the job properly, the bill for parts is around £1100. If you want to do plugs or any other little bits whilst you’re in there you’re going to be looking at nearer £1300.

I’m planning on sending my Supercharger away to get inspected/rebuilt if necessary so am expecting my parts bill to be in the region of £2k by the time I’m finished.

There’s no way I’d be fitting anything other than genuine LR chains/guides/tensioners to mine.

I made a spreadsheet of all the parts needed, am happy to post it if anybody wants it.

David that would be great for a full spreadsheet list of materials chains etc, as I’m sure if someone on here wants to know what to get.

As for the supercharger that’s good as least then it’s all done.

The formatting on this has gone to pot when opening it on my iPad.

I don’t seem to be able to upload pictures onto the forum for some reason so lets see if this works:

I added 12 x LR010694 (bolts for securing the camshaft variators) and 1 x LR011952 (crankshaft pulley bolt).

Total price for everything was just short of £1200.

They looks good I’ll have to add things to my list now but you have added things that I didn’t know to add so thanks for that. Can’t wait to do mine now 👍

I’ve watched a load of YouTube videos from the likes of Atlantic British, etc to build up an idea of what needs changing. I don’t want the be going back in there either so I’m probably being overly cautious.

I’ve also only ordered genuine JLR parts from Duckworth Land Rover. I’m not interested in fitting anything aftermarket as I don’t want it to have a short lifespan. You read of some of the aftermarket timing chain kits lasting less then a year. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather
