TDV8 Turbo Issues

Hey all,
So its been a couple of weeks since even been able to drive the car, finally managed to get it to a garage, 3 days later, they just told me they wouldnt touch it. Its too big a job for them.

And turns out most garages ive found cant be bothered/wont touch it.

So im weighing up my options...

Should i wait about a month for a land rover specialist to be available?
What are the odds of it being not just the turbo's, and it being an endless money pit?

If i were to sell it on, what rough price would I be looking at?
(2007 Black Vogue, 140k miles, 3.6 TDV8)

PS. Has anybody ever managed to replace this themselves without lifting the body?
Seems to be a place in Birmingham claiming they do this (https://best-turbos.com/range-rover-turbo-replacement-without-lifting-the-body-faultless-tdv8-tdv6-turbochargers-reconditioning-and-fitting/) - But its a long way to tow from Yorkshire Laughing

Can’t help directly, but the body doesn’t come off an L322, that’s the Range Rover Sport, so might be a way to tell if the folk you are talking to know what’s actually involved. On the L322 I imagine you could drop the front subframe down, but it’s loads of work. Some folk strip the front of the car off and go in that way I believe too. Good luck with it.

Ah, it maybe a mix of different garages saying "lift the body" and some saying "drop the subframe", id assumed it was the same thing (i assumed each garage knew what they were talking about more tha me haha).

Ive finally got it towed back home, and looks to be worse. Battery is a little low, but when it tries to crank, get a single loud knock/bang and it cuts out.

I think ill just leave it all as is for the time being until the LR specialist is available.

I called Green oval, they were really professional and really helpful.
But definitely gave the highest ballpark quote of up to £5k+

Once I've got some more funds I'll give Simon Services in Wakefield another call

If you search YouTube, there's videos from a company in Birmingham who have developed special tools to replace the turbos in-situ on the L320 and L322 (sorry, I can't remember the name) and they give a few inklings as to how they do it. You can also source turbos from London Turbos.

You'd need to get it trailered down, but almost guaranteed to be less expensive than a specialist.

I too would steer clear of any Land Rover "specialist" who thinks you take the body off an L322. There's not that many Land Rover models to try and remember, that it basically gives away they don't know what they're doing but are happy to hook you in. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Must have kept coming back to that video so many times now 😂

Best-turbos in Birmingham is going to be around the £2800 mark + any towing costs etc.

They seem like the best bet so far, but I guess spending nearly 3k, for a car that's worth 5-6k, and isn't guaranteed to be the only thing wrong, is a hard pill to swallow haha.

So ill avoid making a new thread for now Very Happy

Finally got this to a very well recommended specialist garage.
Just had a call to say the engine is completely stuck, and they were unable to turn the crankshaft manually in either direction.

Obviously, not economical to replace the engine + turbos etc etc.

But, I didnt think it would be possible to start the engine if thats the case?
I had a friend start it up, and it turned over idle fine.
The recovery guy that took it to the garage managed to start it, drive it down my driveway and up his truck fine too.

Am i missing something obvious here??

If the crank is seized, it wouldn't start.

Sounds fishy to me / something got mis-translated?

Turbos or not, it would still start and run and idle fine with the actuators closed - the problems would come if it tried to boost. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Thought so... He seemed confused that i mentioned it started up and idled too, so theyre going to check it further.

The garage has been highly recommended by, well everybody really.

The battery was really flat, so it did struggle to start while it was on my driveway, but once started - idled fine (all be it, very smokey from the exhaust).

So just keeping this thread updated for my own sanity really.

So after calling them every Monday for the last 4 weeks and being delayed after delay I went up in person.

They showed me a video of them unable to turn the engine manually, and then within the hour I showed them that the engine actually starts. (Told them the battery is really knackered and needs a long recharge to even turn over).

So now its back in the queue to have both turbo's replaced.

I hopefully have more positive news in the next 2-3 weeks!

I had a quote of around £2800 from best turbos.

So far, they're well under that. But, let's see if they resolve my issues first before I sing any further praises
