Engine Swap - what happens to road tax, emissions etc ?

I wonder has anyone done an engine swap project ? I’m curious to understand what the bureaucracy is. Say you put a more modern engine in a pre-March 2001 vehicle is a differ rate of road tax due? Do you have to have emissions measured ? Etc etc. TDV8 4.4 2012
