2014 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Loire Blue

I'd of happily paid twice that to not have warm air thrown at me...........

Apparently if you remove all the 1234 you can fill the system with 134 if you can get the correct adapters for the fittings.... Pete

I'd be driving to Spain anyway much more enjoyable, and better than seeing all that work go up in flames in an airport carpark....

We used to regularly drive down to Algeciras to catch the ferry to Ceuta and then on into Morocco - great times.

We did drive down a couple of years ago in the 5.0 S/C it's a 3,100 mile round trip, with fuel (even in the 4.4) ferry, tolls etc it's significantly more expensive than flying, we have a car parked at the airport so it's just so much easier, door to door in around 5 hours, down to the beach and have a beer...

We still plan on driving to see the northern lights sometime soon and I'm researching doing Route 66 so plenty of driving coming up... can't decide between a Stang and Motels or a Winne and camp for Route 66 at the moment...

Fatty will be OK on the drive and at least it won't be dripping it's fluids everywhere, and yes Stan, my back is a bit delicate at the moment.... Pete

A while since I updated this thread...

Fatty sat on the drive for October and November while we were in Spain, started on the button after 58 days, then ran around in the salt for December and luckily it was dry for a few days before we left for Asia early January so I managed to rinse it off and get it dry before it sat on the drive till early March, I left it on a trickle charger and it started fine but I think the auxiliary battery has died as the boot did it's little dance a few times, I guess it charged back up ok for a while but it's doing it again now so I'll have a look after we get back from Dorset where we have come for a few days...

Took an arty shot of fatty where we are staying...

Weekend in Durham next week so fatty is earning it's keep....

Nothing else to report apart from what a nice place to sit.... Pete

Car is looking great, Pete.

When you look after them well, there’s not much that comes close to an RR, is there.

My SC hasn’t needed any spannering since between Christmas and New Year when I sorted the gearbox. I’m now looking for something else that needs fettling to keep me occupied. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Decided to sort out a few issues under the bonnet, the worse being the foam seals from the air intake in the top of the wings and into the bonnet... the mice had a go at it before I bought it, probably during Covid. They were also badly split. They are not handed they just fit the other way up

They are held in with four plastic trim clips that are very tough, it took a trim removing tool to pop them out...

I also needed some trim clips that have been lost over the years and a cover for the passenger side wiper arm retaining nut

A few parts from the dealer and 10 mins and it's now all as it should be...

Just had to tax it again so that's 2 years of ownership....

Not a lot to report, nothing that would have been covered under a JLR warranty has failed so now I am £3,400 up on the "fixing it" fund... The two years of not buying a warranty gamble has paid off so far... I've replaced a few bit's under the bonnet as posted earlier and ended up buying a new battery due to a faulty battery tester...DOH...

Just picked up it's latest mod, a replacement fuel tank guard, it's an excellent used one from dnt on here, sandblasted and fully hot dip galvanised, should last 30 years +

Need to re drill and tap the heat shield holes which always get filled up...

If anyone needs to know, the guard fits sideways in the back of a 405 with the seats down...

Still love the 405, I've booked it in for a full paint correction/polish etc in the Spring as I've been busy with other things and not got round to doing it...

It will spend 90 days on the drive again this winter as we head off for warmer climbs..... Pete

Made another thread of this, don't know why I didn't put it here...!!

Had the L405 for 2 1/2 years and decided to give it a bit of pampering..

It's an Autobiography so has just about everything you would want, it's already got a Merryway Android head unit with CarPlay and a TFT HVAC panel so it feels younger than it is..

First job was to sort the brakes out, the handbrake started staying on a couple of months ago so out with the IID and turned it off, it was set to come on automatically at switch off so I turned that off and now it doesn't come on unless you use the button. Which I haven't done...

The front discs are getting a bit of a lip, and all discs have seen better days cosmetic wise..

So, four new discs, reconditioned rear calipers, the old ones are fine but this is the preventative bit of maintenance, two new handbrake actuators and Powerstop pads all round.

I've also got the refurbished and updated tank guard to fit..

If you have never heard of Powerstop pads then that's because the are mainly sold in the US, I've had them fitted to a lot of cars, and previous fattys and find them excellent, especially in low dust creation,

They also have a specific bedding in procedure...

I do keep checking my front uprights, I'm outside the VIN range but you never know, I've bought some crack detector to give them a good check...

Should keep me quiet for a while, fatty is booked in for some lift time next Monday and I have a few more things to attend to as well... Tailgate realignment is one

Fatty is then booked in for a three day paint correction and 5 year ceramic coat the following Monday, the paintwork is excellent with only two minor marks on the paint but it does have a lot of swirl marks, still rather good for an 11 year old car though...

Don't you just love spending money...

Well today was the day, got a lot covered in a day, side steps, outer and inner sill covers off on the four post ramp, then onto a two post and started dismantling for the new tank guard. You could change the guard without taking the sill covers and steps but I wanted to check the ACE pipes and see if any corrosion needed sorting. Luckily everything looked OK including the pipes..

Exhaust off, heat shields off then prop shaft, had issues with getting it off when I did the ACE pipes, two 6ft+ scaffold poles and the JLR spanners and it still wouldn't budge, decided to try shocking it off so sort of ran at the scaffold pole and it moved 1/4 inch so some back and forth and finally the nut came off...

Then the fun begins, I've said before that the tank guard could rust away and the tank would stay there...!!! Well that was totally wrong, if it rusts away too much the tank could move...

The problem is the guard holds the tank up, drop the guard and the tank comes with it...

I had run the tank to a distance to empty of just 2 miles so it had little in it and didn't weigh much so I hammered a hole in both sides of the guard, didn't take much...!!! and stuck a transmission jack with the top removed through the holes on to a piece of wood and held the tank up, then removed the guard and left the tank in place.

There are several places to use tie wraps to hold the tank up while you fit the new guard, a few bolts later and it was all in and sorted....

Shields, prop and exhaust re fitted....

Then moved onto the brake replacements, all four discs, front and rear pads, new rear callipers and hand brake actuators...

The off side rear calliper had seized and one pad was stuck fast, the other one had worn down to the metal but strangely hadn't made any noise. The pad wear indicator was on the seized pad so didn't go off...!!!

Then had a look at the infamous gearbox shield as I had started to get a vibration around 1,200rpm It wasn't split like some but I took it off anyway... it did have one fixing screw missing so maybe that did it....

Also found a coolant leak, seems to be running down the back of the engine... there is another job..!!

Back on the four post lift and inner and outer sill covers and steps back on and job done for today, pleased with the condition of the underside on the whole, looking good for an eleven year old fatty with 85,000 miles under it's belt...

So just a coolant leak to sort now...!!!

Guard was totally rotten....
