Newbie seeking wisdom of the crowd - first purchase

Hi everyone. Eagerly looking to scratch the itch of owning an L322 and have been trawling the forum trying to absorb as much as possible.

Been looking around the usual sites for some time to find the right one, not in a major rush but eager to get one.

I have come across a 2011 TDv8 4.4 Vogue with an exterior/interior colour I really like and just under 120k miles. One owner from new, in good condition, no rust etc, and up until 99k miles was main dealer serviced (last done in 2021), from there it looks like there has only been one more service in 2023 at 115k by a local (nonspecialist) garage. Just a stamp in the book, no additional receipts, etc

My only real concern is that in the last couple of years as the car crossed the 100k miles and approached the 120k range there might have been some larger ticket service/maintenance items that may not have been done and I would need to get done or could have left the car running less optimally/at fisk of bigger issues and in need of repair. The dealer price is on the higher side for age/mileage compared with some others but if the condition is good I'm ok with that - just need to factor in additional costs.

Would someone be able to share what is typically part of a service at 99-120k miles - or 11/12 years? Or what might have needed replacing in that time/things to look out for?

For context this wouldn't be a daily driver for me (at least that's what I'm telling myself now....), it would mostly be for longer trips away - maybe 3k a year. My budget is quite flexible but naturally comes at an opportunity cost. But the sweet spot I think would be between £10-15k and 90-120k miles with a nice pot of cash on the side for maintenance etc. and this car seems to fit that, all be it at the higher end of mileage. Primarily I've been looking at condition and maintenance records rather than mileage and age.

Any advice or recommendations are gratefully received. With so many options out there it's a natural trade-off from one to another.

There is one other option - where I could sell my F-type to release some extra cash, forgo L322 ownership, and go straight to the L405 and get a Land Rover warranty, but I really do have the L322 itch Very Happy.

Good luck with your search, I can't help with the diesels, but if it supercharged I can definitely help. L322 or L405 you wont be dissapointed. I have to ask, if only 3k a year why on earth don't you go for a Supercharged, you will have less issues in my view and the smile will be just as big if not bigger.

Very valid point. I’ve certainly been keeping an eye out for the supercharged as would certainly buy one given my intended use, but haven’t seen many up for sale that fit the bill from an l322 perspective.

If I was going l405 then there would be more potential I think

I bought a 2011 at 83,000 miles and now on 124,000. Just had normal servicing and all oils changed (g'box, transfer etc.). Only fault was the inlet manifold cracked (inferior LR part, now improved) at 100,000. rest was mainly wear and tear such as suspension arms replaced, tracking. Other than that all good.

I think JLR say 100k or 10 years have all the oils changed, gearbox, diffs, transfer box etc etc. usual suspects are oil cooler leaking (£700 inc labour approx) starter motor goes sub 100k. Suspension legs start to feel weak sub 100k, but to be fair to the RR, it’s similar to any other car, it’s a combustion engine powering transmission…..looked after, she’ll be fine.
Mileage really isn’t an issue, these girls rev so low, looked after, they’ll do 300k no problem.
If that were me, after any purchase go for a huge service, all the oils regardless if they ‘should’ have been done so you’re starting with a clean canvas. Let Bodsy do the gearbox megaflush + the other oils & you’re done for the next 5-10 years.
A decent LR Indy is also vital, lots of garages won’t work on these girls.
Diesel v petrol that’s your choice, I’m a derv lover & my 4.4TDV8 is surprisingly good on fuel especially on a long run! 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

If you are only doing 3k per year and have a flexible budget then defo think about the 5.0SC. There isn't a switch that flips when you go over 100k but these are now all old cars at whatever mileage so ignore everything else but the condition and have it expertly inspected. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I'd avoid a 4.4 TDV8 at that proposed annual mileage. They need long runs as they have a DPF.
I'd go petrol tbh 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
New Defender D300 90 on order so "Rory" will be going to a new home....!

Thanks all for the guidance.
Sadly the original car I was looking at went before I had a chance to view it. Never mind plenty more out there.
I do have a friend who’s looking to sell his 2011 4.4 autobiography- I actually know both past owners, and it’s well looked after, likely needs new pads and disks soon and maybe a few other bits (perhaps belts) as there was a slight squealing on start up, but a well cared for vehicle overall. Downside is at circa 120k miles he is pricing is a few £k over dealer alternatives.

I’m certainly keeping an eye out for the petrol. Not done as much research into them and what to look for but sure I can easily rectify that with this forum Smile .

Not sure if I’m looking in the wrong places but also seems to be very few petrol ones up for sale

Thought I’d share. Not long after posting the above and a couple of missed opportunities I came across this one, put a refundable deposit down immediately based on the history and picked her up a couple of weeks ago. Very happy with it so far. Took it to my local specialist the other day for a quick once over and they confirmed it was a very well-maintained one. A couple of maintenance pieces to sort, as expected with a car of this age - and despite not being immediately needed I’m getting them
Done anyway (rear brake lines slightly corroded). Happy to be part of the club and learning from the wealth of knowledge on this forum.
