L322 Repair and Service Costs

Hello all,

Just trying to justify the running costs of my 2012 4.4TDV8

I only keep it to tow a 1500Kg Caravan once or twice a year (wouldn't want to tow it with anything else). The previous owner used a 1.7Tdi Vectra. That and Our Youngest Daughters use it when they visit.

Anyway..........

Service at JLR, £750

Independent I take it to, Circa £400 for an A Service

Just had some quotes in for.........from same Independent Garage

ZF 8 Speed Gearbox Service £1,080
New Oil Cooler £975

All Seems a bit too High to me !

We all need to make a living and cover costs, but............What do you think ?

You could get these jobs done a bit cheaper but it's still going to be an expensive car to run.
Gearbox service using ZF fluid can be replaced by a 'mega flush' at about 1/2th price but it won't be using ZF fluid or include a filter change.
Oil cooler is about £200 for a pattern part + fitting( free if you DIY). 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Gearbox service I’d go with Bodsy on here, never used him but everyone seems mega happy with his service & price, plus, he comes to you. Half the price you’ve been quoted I believe.
Oil cooler is 4.5hrs labour alone plus the cooler itself, either OEM or Nissen, think my genuine cooler fitted was circa £700 two years ago. You can get away with just the gaskets I believe but that’s up to you.
Hope this helps. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Fatties really hate not being used, IMHO it's the worse thing you can do, just keeping one as a weekend car is bad enough but to only use one a few times a year is asking for all sorts of trouble...

Those prices seem very high, I'd shop around... Thumbs Up Pete

There is nothing wrong with only using it occasionaly for bigger trips. Nothing of significance will deteriorate. Worst thing you can do is to use it regularly for short trips. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Bodsy just quoted me £340 foe gearbox megaflush and £160 for diffs/transfer case.

Service by specialist is about £400 as already mentioned.

It’s the road tax at £685 that grates on me.

It was just under £1000 for my oil cooler change but that was in 2016 and it needed lots of flushing out.

We are going away next weekend, and if it wasn’t for that I’m not sure I’d be doing much more than 2000 miles in 12 months. Can’t think of anything that I’d rather have…. That I can afford anyway 🤣.

My Dad has just paid £114 for a rubber hose for his Evoque… cars are pretty expensive nowadays….. not sure the other brands are any cheaper…..

If you’re really using it that little, I’d look at selling it and just hiring a car for the trips. Would possibly work out cheaper once tax and insurance are considered too!

thanks for the replies.

All taken on-board.

Car has travelled 64,000 miles and gearbox can wait I guess, just have to stomach the oil cooler for now.

I have run many Japanese cars , 1/2 or less the engine power towing 1.5 ton and almost trouble free for up-to 250,000 miles.

Thanks again from Dusseldorf in our utterly reliable 23 year old Euro III Diesel Ducato Motorhome.

After owning 3 Much newer and brand new Mercedes that cost a rocking fortune to run and utterly unreliable as were the dealers.

The oil cooler is “just one of those things” that happens to these girls, get it changed & forget. There’ll be something else that comes along to be changed shortly🤣 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!
