Harsh kickdown

I’ve noticed a few times if I use kickdown, it seems to change down, the engine spools up to silly revs and the gear engages after a pause with quite a thump, with the torque converter stinking for a period afterwards. Dropping two cogs with the paddles doesn’t cause the same issue. Any ideas, please? Gearbox software or something?

i know the 405 with this engine and gearbox combo (4.4TDV8, ZF8) can have a similar issues. How do I fix it, other than not use the kickdown. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

My 405 had something similar. The gearbox software was re-done and that seemed to cure it. I think there was a "service bulletin" issued by LR about that known fault, though no recall, i.e. it would be done for customers who complained about having that problem, not automatically on annual service or the like.

Maybe see if there is something like that for the 322 also? Only Range Rovers since 1988

There is a gearbox software update available and Glenrands will do it for a fee but that sounds not right to me and didn't happen to mine before I had the software update. Have you checked the fluid level in the gearbox and /or had it serviced at all? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Surprised you can smell the fluid when driving, it must be getting pretty well cooked. Sad

Transmission fluid could be burning from slipping clutch packs or overheating from a sticking thermostat block.

Have you some diagnostics kit that you can monitor transmission fluid temperatrure with?

How many miles on the gearbox?

The smell was a one off after parking.

Gearbox is 77000 miles with a full fluid change a couple of years ago. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

Wow, low miles and well maintained, don't know what to suggest in this case. 1992 RR Classic 3.9 efi Vogue

I’ll go down the software update route initially I think. My specialist has the kit so he tells me. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

A reflash seems to have cured it. Should get chapter and verse from LR next week.

I went up to 55 profile tyres from 50s a little while ago, which probably had something to do with it. Apparently the car now knows the new tyre size. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

The car needs manualy programing for 55 tyres as the speedo will be bang on and not the standard over reading. Some like it like that though. Gear changes may be different as the load is higher but not sure if any of the other input parameters in the GAP IID do anything but it's probably best to set them up for the exact tyre size as things like ABS and traction control may be effected? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

United Kingdom 2014 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Santorini Black

Hi guys got some issue here when car is cold hesitates changing from 2nd to 3rd gear hard downshift from 2nd to 1st only does this once once car is warmed up no hesitation form 2nd to 3rd but I do notice a bit of dancing about on rev needle when changing in gear 2nd to 3rd. Had the gearbox software update from Gap didn't make any difference. The car also has the bang clunk when on kickdown feels like bottom of car in centre. Had transmission oil change and transfer case oil change no difference. Any other options to explore greatly appreciated. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 SDV8 SVO Stying Pack

Probably best to ask in the L405 forum but from the sounds of it I'd be seeking a diagnosis from a ZF qualified gearbox specialist. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
