Dummy obd port….any good

Hi

Spotted this and wondered if anyone has tried something like this?

Yes, I use a simpler version as a security item. All it is is a OBD plug which connects into the original socket and a OBD socket which replaces the proper one under the dash. Items plugged in to the OBD show power, but it's not possible to get connection to the car.

I suppose a car thief might work it out pretty quickly, though those extra few seconds might make the difference and was only about £10. Current:

- 2002 L322 4.4 HSE (having fixed timing chain guides)
- 2000 P38 4.6 Vogue (BRC LPG)

- 1968 SIIA

- 2003 L322 4.4 Vogue

Time and the added siren right in the area of the obd port might put them off??

I have simply disabled my obd port instead of relocating it. But in such a way that it can be quickly re-enabled very quickly should I need to use it. Kev

I have the simpler one without the siren, to all appearances the car looks exactly the same, so I can’t see how a thief could notice it, everything is hidden behind the lower panel, and you can tuck the extra wiring up out of the way. Downside is wear & tear on the screws and fittings and OBD socket itself from repeated access when you need to do diagnostics/monitor soot levels etc it also becomes inconvenient. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but what about just taking the fuse for the diagnostic socket out? or even rig up a discreet switch I don't know if isolating the power or the canbus to the socket would be better.

Wouldn't isolating power to the gear selector do the same thing?

You could start the car, but couldn't put it into gear. Current:

Yesss! I'm the process of swapping out a Range Rover sport gear shift lever in place of my spinny knob.
I proposed the same thing! You could splice into the power for your gear selector and make the leads as long as you like.

It is the slightly heavier gauge Red/Brown wire in the upper left (Pin 1). Cut that - splice in a switch and stick it in the upper glove box. When you exit the vehicle, put it in Valet mode... They can't get into the glove box to flip the switch.

I decided to make a blanking plate to cover the OBD port. There's already a screw near to it which cab be used and another self tapper completes the job. With that and the fuse out it should at least slow them down but if the Wife ever needs to call the AA she'll have some explaining to do. Surprised

So that is how they are stealing them? Tapping into the OBD port?
I thought I saw something that they were somehow stealing the signal from the radio key and then turning around and unlocking/starting the truck with some sort of a wireless emulator...

I guess the truck is unlocked wirelessly, but the 'start emulator' has to be plugged in to the OBD?
I wonder if the gear knob could be activated from the OBD...
