Pre purchase inspection checks - what costly things to check

Hi all, I have a pre purchase inspection booked in for tomorrow for a 2014 Autobiography I have put a deposit down on.

The garage isn’t a specialist as none could fit me in at such short notice, but he does overflow work for one and is (reluctantly) very familiar with all things LR related.

He’s asked for a list of anything I’d like specifically checked. Apart from the usual (he’s doing an MOT at the same time), what would you recommend him looking at?

Turbo’s? oil dilution? Air suspension? Any other common or especially costly faults on the L405 to particularly look out for? The mechanic only has an hour after he’s done the MOT. Confused

Thanks for any advice

Sorry if l missed but guessing it's a diesel? What engine? No expert but it may help others to comment. Front knuckles seem to be a hot topic! Obviously running any diagnostics, checking codes? Previous mot history?

Sorry, it’s a 4.4 diesel. I’ve done due diligence with MOT history and even paid for a car vertical check for the first time (which pretty much a waste of £30 as everything on it was available for free through lane rover or the dvla).

I’ve requested the inspector do a full diagnostics and also a test drive to check for any shuddering from the transfer box. I’ve told him to give it some beans too, check knuckles, diff leaks, oil cooler leaks and a battery health check.

If there’s anything else to advise him of it would be great. Looking online there’s nothing really to find and walk away from (unless it’s a complete lemon), but I’m hoping he can check anything that could turn out costly down the road.

Oil leaks, oil leaks and more oil leaks! Coolant leaks from both the engine area and back towards the rear seat passengers, as these have 4 zone climate so have coolant lines to the rear seat passengers heater matrix... Corrosion on aluminium AC pipework held to the car using mild steel clips! Rolling Eyes
Worn brake discs & pads (genuine JLR brakes are expensive)...
Tyres are a dead giveaway... Cheap ditch finders will give you an idea just how she's been maintained...

Good luck Thumbs Up

Thanks, good tips! Yes I wanted to know the tyres from my first call about the car, it says so much. Luckily it has continentals all round, so many I saw previously described as “no expense spared” and then they have accellera tyres! I walk away on that basis alone!
