Going back to a L322?

Hi there! Not been here for ages, but now I need an opinion on which is better - especially offroad - L322 or L405?

I own a 2014 SDV8 AB - amazing car! But coming from an 2012 L322 TDV8, I just miss something. Maybe it‘s just me, I lwant a big car to drive like a ‚truck‘ and not to handle like a car as the L405 does.

I love my L405 (just needed to get used to the design) as where I‘ve always loved the looks of a L322.
Point beeing: I want to go overlanding. Sold my Defender that I used for that, looking now for a replace, but one with more comfort. just can‘t imaginge taking my L405 offroad. A car with soft-close doors and electrically operated tailgate - just not rugged enough for me… or am I wrong?

I did go back to a l322 from a l405 for similar reasons but many high end uk shoots use l405’s for shoot vehicles. I guess it depends how off road you want but don’t lose sight of the fact that the 2 most capable off road vehicles Land Rover make have always been the defender and the Range Rover. Current: RR L322 2010

L405 is perfect off road - I use mine for shooting - 2 or 3 days a week in the season. Have you done the LR Experience ? The L405 is one of the most capable, you just need to be careful with wheel and tyre choice - 20/21” are fine. 22” will work and both AT and some mud tyres are available to fit, but the alloys will get scuffed. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Great! Thank you for yout inputs Thumbs Up

Thing is: my L405 doesn‘t have the rear locking diff, the L322 would have one.
Then again I suppose the Terrain Response on the L405 is more sophisticated…

It depends a bit what you mean by "overlanding". If you have TETs and similar in western Europe in mind then I think both would be OK. Both are wide and won't like narrow/overgrown trails.

The 322 is slightly more practical with the tumbling rear seats and more readily accessible recovery eyes. My experience of the 405 is that its suspension components are a bit more fragile (and there is the particular problem of knuckle breakage, see threads elsewhere on here) and one has to replace bushes more regularly. Against that the 405 is a bit lighter and, as you say, the terrain response is better. There might be more resistance to body flex with the 322, my 405 upper tailgate has needed to be realigned a couple of times and I wonder how a panoramic roof would stand up to lots of extreme articulation.

The 322 will take style 15 19" wheels and Goodyear Duratrac 255/55R19 and the 405 20" wheels and Duratracs in 255/55R20, (both LR homologated for off road) so you'd have similar traction with both (speed rating on the 19" version is higher if that matters to you).

322s will now be at least 10yo, so maybe riskier from a component failure perspective, mine also had a variety of electrical problems.

If you are planning on travel in other areas then maybe a different forum would be more helpful, from a general reputation perspective the 200 or 70 series Land Cruisers or maybe a Unimog conversion might be more suitable Only Range Rovers since 1988

Would you only purchase a L322 if it had a rear e-diff? They weren't standard fitment.

So I test drove the L322 today, and it was the first time I‘ve had the L405 side by side for a comparison.

The ride in the L405 is way better, also it has a more luxurious feeling about it. But it looks so „fat“ when you compare it to a L322. It took me about two hours to decide what I was to do:

I exchanged my L405 for the L322.

My L405 (SDV8 Autobiography) is a MY2014 with 190’000 km, whereas the L322 (2011 TDV8 Autobiography Black) has just 100‘650 km! The L322 just seemed to be more accurate for offroading. I‘m not saying it was more capable, but feels more rugged… Just mz opinion.

Thank you so much for your comments!
