Just came back from the town centre after doing a bit of shop-lifting on my way home approaching one of the roundabouts a Police outrider appears stopping everyone closely followed by another 5 outriders jockeying for position and in amongst them Four squad traffic cars with all the lights going each loaded with coppers and there in the middle of this melee one prison van (sprinter type size).

so why so many coppers suited and booted for what four / six or maybe only the one prisoner .

So whats the Bill for that then …..

Its called a cat A escort and the cops in the cars would have been armed......sadly this sort of thing takes place up and down the country every day. Its used to convey the top tier criminals from high security prisons to crown courts for trials. These are the sort of crims that have the means or connections to break out if given the chance.

I spent many years in such a car escorting these people and always wondered why on earth we didnt use video links to the courts!

I was doing some work a few months ago at Strathclyde HQ just before the pope's visit to Glasgow and just happened to be leaving as the guys in the escort squad (well I assume it was) were going out for a dry run.

It was a amazing feeling to be waved out by a traffic cop on a bike, who had stopped the traffic on the main road to let us all out!
