AutoWatch have updated their guidance to installers for Land Rovers. There's a prescribed set of installation locations and install method they will warrant. The Ghost will first immobilise the gearbox and then immobilise the engine - I.e. the car will start but immediately stall when moved into a gear, and then will not restart at all. I would recommend editing the car's CCD to enable 'parking brake engine stall apply'.

Of course a visual deterrent is also very beneficial, a steering wheel lock being the most practical.

Turn off keyless entry regardless of model year.

Interesting GarryRR, do you know when that guidance came in?

When mine was fitted in 2021, it was standard to fit it to the Transmission so the Engine would start but no transmission working etc. But both methods were offered.
I asked for the Engine immobilised option, as I always thought why would you want a thief to start your car in the first place? Its almost half stolen Rolling with laughter

I was told by the installer that Dealers were originally getting complaints from owners who had this Transmission method, that Red warning signs were on the Dash and DTC codes causing starting issues etc etc. To such an extent that some dealers refused to work on those vehicles till the G2 was removed.
I guess those initial teething issues were ironed out then?

Strange isn't it Ghost is not recognised by the insurers but trackers with imobilisers are.

On their adverts it says its TASSA approved yet all these comparison sites dont ask this question.

The Autowatch Ghost is the leading aftermarket CAN bus immobiliser and is now Approved by TASSA Accreditation.
For Insurance Approval, the TASSA accredited Ghost II must be installed by a TASSA Approved Installer – !

@GaryRR:

I think you slightly missed my first point for discussion, i.e. what is the effect of these devices on our premiums, and has anyone experienced a reduction in premium when mentioning such a device is fitted?

I suspect not, since many people start out with good intentions, then after a while it gets left off. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

@Kot - I believe the guidance to installers was updated in 2023 from the tech note I was shown.

Once the vehicle is immobilised first by the transmission (triggers an engine stall), it is then fully immobilised and also won't start thereafter.

@Gremlin500 - I was just pointing out that impact to insurance premium, whilst it would be nice for it to reduce, isn't the main thing. The main thing is the car not being stolen in the first place, and is very good reason to turn off keyless, get an immobiliser fitted and use a visual deterrent, irrespective of impact on insurance. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I have started using a Stoplock Pro. If you turn your wheel just off-centre anti-clockwise so the lower right ‘spoke’ is horizontal, then the locking bit fits over it nicely and the arm rests nicely against the left hand spoke but doesn’t interfere with the controls. I use a small Velcro strap to keep the arm tight to the steering wheel. 2018 L405 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography
