Fuel guage playing up

Noticed yesterday the fuel guage had dropped in the morning and it took a few hours before it bounced back to where it should be. I've looked at the issue and it seems there is a known issue and a technical repair procedure which I've downloaded but it looks like a messy job. The real danger is of it happening again before I can find time to fix it and it causing an engine shut down so as an interim fix I'm going to look at splicing in an a resistor to fool the ECU to keep the car running.
Interestingly I had this issue on my Audi and I kept it going by lifting the hatch in the floor and hitting the housing which kicked it back into life. This was a 4x4 with a tansmission tunnel that the tank was formed over an had a lift pump to equalise the levels on each side. There was also advice from owners not to over fill the tank by adding more fuel after the pump's autostop has activated. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Hi JayGee

In case it helps I had exactly this problem and found the various posts you refer to detailing the known problem.

In my case, however, a wire in the loom that travels from the top of the tank under the drivers' side rear seat squab had worn through and was shorting. It's not too difficult to remove the squab and check the condition of the wires so may be worth eliminating first.

Good luck.

Hi Shaun, if you don’t fix it you the car will eventually think it’s ran out of fuel and shut down the engine. Plenty of posts on here on how to fix the wire in the fuel tank, can be done but can be messy. When I did it I found having as little fuel in the tank as possible made the job easier, as your working from above the tank through the access holes be careful you don’t drop anything in the tank. I snipped the offending wire and joined with a bullet connector. Had no issues since and that repair was a couple of years ago.

Do you need access to both sides of the tank or just one ?

When mine packed upon the middle of winter I got a variable resistor (from Maplins it was that long ago). I wired it to the sender unit wires under the back seat then adjusted it to show half a tank then waited for the weather to get better.
I ended up running it like that until the following August with no problems

There's also a connector in the tank that causes issues. I just opened it up and cut the connector out soldered and heat shrunk the wires. Ed

Slightly messy job really, I had the garage fix mine and saved quite a bit of money by making access to the tank easier for them. I pulled the carpet up towards the back of the front seats and tied it up round the seats exposing the sensor covers so they had easy access to them, the tension in the seats means they won't stay up on their own. This is after moving bits and pieces to enable the carpet to be lifted.

The mechanic removed the sensors and re-soldered the wires on the bench, plus shrink-wrap, refitted them leaving me to replace the carpets etc.

There was as expected a lingering odour of diesel for a couple of days but a sprinkling of cat litter on the carpet helped it disperse.

Doing this really reduced the labour cost to about just over an hour. RR owner

I didn't find it a particularly messy job in the slightest. Made sure that the tank was pretty empty as I didn't know how far down the connector was.

I think I was all done inside an hour, folded seats up, lifted carpet and tied it around the seats to hold it out the way. Disconnected fuel lines, undid the locking ring and pulled the wires out. Cut one side of the connector out, stripped wires back, soldered them together heatshrink over that. Repeat for the second one and had also put a piece of heatshrink to cover both.

Job done after just dropping carpet back down, bolting seat retaining brackets in and voila. Not a difficult job in the slightest, nor messy if you're careful pulling the sender out. Ed

I much happier working with diesel than petrol in this kind of situation. No toxic vapours and no fireball risk. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
