Coding is only necessary with the 6-speed transmissions onwards, when the transmission ECU became integrated into the transmission.

If you’re changing the whole gearbox then yes it’ll need coding to the car.

The module that will need coding it the black plastic one that is bolted directly to the mechatronics unit inside the sump.

I have bought the tool mate I fitted second hand one then garage said no wanted all new parts is it easier if I fit a new tcm unit or will it still code with second hand fitted ? |

You can definitely flash a used TCM with the IID tool.
