Hi all

I've ordered some texamatic ETL-7045E to service my GM gearbox but looks like I'm being messed around, or at least the delivery is going to be delayed.

I understand that the BMW equivalent is BMW 83 22 0 026 922?

Would someone confirm that is correct and does anyone have a link for either oil, ?

Texamatic 7045E was a Dexron III fluid, for which the GM licences expired in 2006, so that’s amazing if it is still available. GM moved users on to Dexron VI, but there is a potential issue in that its viscosity (new) is lower than that of Dexron III. Not necessarily a good thing if your valve blocks are worn, which is a particularly common issue with the 5L40-E! The justification is that the better shear stability of Dexron VI means the viscosity remains at its design specification for longer i.e. after a period of use it will be higher than ‘worn out’ Dexron III. I suspect that the BMW fluid that you mentioned is Dexron VI.

Yes that does seem like the best option and by your reasoning that makes complete sense. I intend on regularly changing the oil anyway, so will just use the Texaco ATF-HD 389 as id like to get this done asap as just purchased the RR (which is in mint condition aside from a pause when you pop it into D first thing in the morning ) and see if i can source some 7045e in the meantime.

I’m also just about to service the gearbox on my 2004 GM gearbox and have fallen down a rabbit hole of oil!

I’d like to buy a 20l container and do several oil changes before the final oil and filter change, hopefully replacing most of the oil.

I see that Texaco ATF-HD 389 looks to be a good replacement for the original spec oil but is still quite pricey. I’m considering buying 20l of Mannol ATF Automatic Plus Dexron 2/3 8206 Transmission Fluid. It is recommended for automatic gearboxes of passenger cars and commercial vehicles requiring the ATF Type Dexron-III H/G/F or Dexron-II E or FORD MERCON V quality oil. It is designed for the majority of automatic gearboxes for General Motors, Ford Company and other brands manufactured up to 2006.

Sadly not all the figures are available on the data sheet but the kinematic viscosity at 40 degrees is >30mm2/s which is similar to the original spec.

I just had my TD6 gearbox refurbished and the company provided me with the Castrol Transmax ATF DXIII Multivehicle oil. It specifically mentions the GM5L40E and I have to say that the gearbox behaves perfectly. I needed to do another oil change after 1000km and used it again.
