Recommendations for an SDV8 engine rebuild Home Counties

Hi everyone,
Unfortunately the bottom end of my SDV8 has gone on the way to work yesterday, and I need to get it rebuilt-or scrap it!, but that seems a bit extreme so looking for recommendations of places for a rebuild, I've found one place that's £5k which seems about right given the work involved and they'll need the car a couple of weeks.
Just wondering if anyone has had to have it done and have anywhere they really recommend too.

Bought the 4.4 as I thought this issue din't happen on it, may as well have just risked getting a 3 litre!, or just gone the whole way and got the Supercharged! Laughing

£5k seems a bit cheap to me, do lots of research on the outfit doing the rebuild, there are a lot of dodgy places who will do half a job or less...

Others will be along soon with places they have found that are reliable...

Sorry for your loss... Sad Pete

Look up JPSK Motors Ltd on Facebook.

I've never used him but the work and photographs that he documents look fantastic.

A good indication of how good somewhere are is the lead time to get you booked in. The good places always have lengthy lead times.

I’ve just finished reading your thread on rebuilding yours and definitely not for the faint hearted!.

My mechanical ability is about brake pads and oil changes Laughing , rebuilding an SDV8 looks like a monumental task!.

It’s a bit of a tough decision but I’ve decided to go for a rebuild, the car will be pretty much worthless as it is and if I do it I’ve got peace of mind that I can run it for a couple of years before I upgrade to an L460 when they depreciate a bit more!.

Think this will be my last diesel LR though, every one I’ve had has had issues, petrol V8 or one of the petrol hybrids next time!.

You have my commiserations with this !

I’m on my 3rd V8 Diesel and absolutely no issues so far at all. In 17 Range Rovers the only engine
failure I have had was in a Classic 2.4 VM back in 1988…..

Worthless piece of info - but that engine/RR held the Land Speed Record for a Diesel engine for 24hours at the time 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

I regularly drive past this place https://nwsmotorservices.com/ and they always have plenty of L405’s and L494’s parked outside waiting for new engines so probably a bit of a waiting list Their premises look decent - I always think a smart and tidy workshop is a good sign.

I have no direct experience of them however, but might be worth researching as an option.

You’ve had great luck with them then!, my probs with diesel RRs over the years are:

2.7 Sport-gearbox failure
3.6 L322-gearbox failure
3.6 Sport-turbo failure

And now 4.4 L405- engine failure

The thing is they’re still amazing cars when they’re running right, I’ve just not had the best of luck with them.
Think petrol is the way forward moving on.
I’m going to get the L405 done and run it another couple of years, at least I know it will be sorted now but after that my next one will be a petrol for sure, either the 3 litre hybrid in the L460 or the 4.4 V8 TT BMW engine one.
Just need to wait for them to depreciate to more affordable money-like about 40k! Laughing

Just got an old Audi TT 225 bhp convertible to drive until the RR is sorted, very different kind of car but I quite like it for now!.
