off to France (Caen) in a couple of weeks and intend to go to the Normandy beach's ,so was wondering for some pointers on where i should visit ?

Everywhere is closed on a Sunday so pack a lunch.

Last entry for the the American Cemetary is 15 minutes before closing so 16:45 and they are strict. I got
there at 10 to on my last day and was denied entry. Gutted.

Longues Sur Mer Battery is awesome. Read up on the history and visit.

Visited Gold Beach and Pegasus Bridge because I'm British, but I'm a huge Band of Brothers fan so went to the Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mer-Englis. Very expensive for what it is, should probably have went to some of the less offical museums dotted around.
Visited the Major Richard Winter's memorial and the E Company memorial.
Obviously visited Omaha Beach as I'm a Saving Private Ryan fan too.

There is something around every corner and when you look at old photos it all looks exactly the same except the houses have modern windows.

I only had one day there and it was not enough but it was part of a bigger road trip to Dunkirk, some of the Ypres Trenches, Hill 60 and others.
I was in Belgium having a modifcation done to my Porsche.

Then headed down to Reims-Gueux for a photo stop before going through Paris and onto Normandy. ---------------------------------

Arromanches has a D-Day museum with a working model of the Mulberry Harbour. There are also the remaining caissons of the harbour on the beach there. John

Quite a few years ago now was sailing along the French coast and anchored inside the caissons for lunch. Possible as long as the tide is in. There was a buoyed entrance channel. John

From Calais to Caen it’s just three hours or so & you get to go over the spectacular Normandy bridge.

Stop at honfleur if driving down. They are rebuilding Willys conquering boat from scratch in the old tradition …fascinating. Park there and walk across the bridge to the town centre. Nice place.


The British memorial which opened only a couple of years ago.
The Caen memorial museum & Paris style shopping for senior management & Willy the conc churches/hospitals/ruins. Caen was 90% destroyed by the invasion.
Bayeux & Tapestry… check they haven’t taken it down yet . Bayeux is anyway nice to visit.
Slip across to Granville & down to mont st michael . Use the coast road.
The carentan national park is stunning.
Cherbourg . A nuclear submarine as part of seaworld(?) .

Ville dieux is an interesting town with the bell foundry & a swift lunch.

Used to go in there by boat and it was quite magical, especially in the evenings. Now nothing but restaurants on the quayside and tourist ripoffs.

Must of changed rapidly as my last of many stops was last August! One man’s meat is another’s poison.

U certainly scared off the OP…. As he lives in Portsmouth unlikely to be passing anyway.

It was just my opinion. I remember it from previous visits. Noi intention to put you off. Enjoy your trip.  John

no you haven't ppl view things in different ways so its not a problem

back from Normandy trip had a great time thanks for the recommendation's, did them and more ,1500 miles and not a foot wrong with the with the old girl great drive .
