L322 4.4 TDV8 Rear Engine Oil Leak (other than cooler)

Any ideas on this one.
I have a slow oil leak from the rear of the engine and almost certain from poking around with the borescope that its not coming from the cooler.
Cooler gaskets and orings were done about 2 years ago.
Oil appears to be coming down on both sides of the bell housing.
Not a lot but enough to get a drip or two on the garage floor every couple of weeks.
Before embarking on a weekends work, anyone have other ideas as to where this might be coming from?

I have exactly the same issue, although I’ve eliminated the front crankshaft oil seal and also the timing chain tensioner bolt cover.

My leak is now down to a couple of drops sitting on the subframe overnight, so certainly not excessive. It’s going in to be looked at later this week, so I’ll report back.

The timing chain tensioner cover can be seen in the pic here. The casting ar around 8 o’clock with the orange on it is the area that was leaking The oil was being blown to the rear of the engine with the fan and air movement whilst driving, so looked as though it was manifesting from the rear.

I’m hoping my drips are now just residual oil from the previous issues and that it’s not now going down the bell housing, but will report back. Could be a rear crankshaft oil seal.

Hi Benji,
I have an similar issue and I’m struggling to find the cause.
I did think mine might be from lower down as the oil cooler has been changed and is dry.
Having used a camera there is some oil on top of the block around the rear of the egr assembly.
There is also a dish in the top of the block under the egr which can collect oil.

I added a UV dye to my oil and the oil dripping off at the bottom, as yet, hasn’t shown the dye.
I do wonder if this is residual oil collected at the top when the cooler was leaking and the making its way down slowly.
Christian from LR time has a similar issue and took the gearbox out but it was coming from the top and running down between the engine and block.
I think the next stage for me is to strip the top end back down including removing the egr.
Hope this helps and this is my previous thread.

Plenty of threads on this

It could be….

Perished / squashed o-rings on the oil feed for the turbos at the back of the engine

Easy fix

Back from the garage - my leak is the transfer box output flange seal. This chucks oil around so you’re searching all over for the culprit. A couple of hrs work if your driveshaft pops out ok.

Once they pointed it out it was a no-brainer. The trouble is if you have oil leaks from a number of places contaminating the crime scene.

I’ve had front crankshaft oil seal done as well as the timing chain cover, both of which were leaking, so I’m pretty confident this will be the end of my leaks.

I hope this is the same for your car.
