If you want to replace the oil pump on the SDV8 with the engine in situ then to 'do it properly' you need to remove the sump, and to remove the sump you need to remove the front diff, and to remove the front diff, you need to remove the driveshafts... You'd also need to remove the starter to be able to fit the rear crank locking tool to allow you to remove the crankshaft main front bolt.

I don't like to put a dampner on the solution, but it's much the same procedure for the TD/SDV6, the wsm states the sump should be removed, not saying you have to but... L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division. |

@rrs ok.....when looking for videos sdv8 i did see many of the sdv6 been done and they did only remove the oil pump and replace it using approved range rover sealant hence why i asked ,and it looks like the sump gasket on the sdv6 doesn't go under the bottom of the oil pump, and if range rover just use there sealant and not a gasket then i don't know .....and i wouldn't put it past some dealers it do just that. |

I'm sure the dealers do that, but charge against the workshop manual time, big win for them! L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division. |

oh hell yea big time....... and im guessing or assuming here but i bet even independent specialists do the same (sealant) job done .i have just been looking at the sump gasket and doesn't look like it actually is made to go between the bottom of the oil pump and sump so they must just use sealant as there is no gasket apart from the rubber one around the pump and the crankshaft seal (i could be wrong tho) |

The pump should be fitted with the sump off as you are supposed to align the face of the pump and block with a straight edge, which obviously you can't do with the sump in place. I thought the gasket also fitted between the pump and the sump, but maybe I'm mistaken.
