Sleeping battery....

Having an old L405, which JLR just don't care about, you have to do with other methods of making it hard to steal as no update is coming from JLR.

I've got a tracker and a separate immobilizer as well as a few other things which I'm not going into here...

I refuse to disable the keyless entry as I don't see why the scum should ruin my enjoyment of all the cars features...

I was looking into the sleeping batteries and the idea is excellent, shame you have to buy 2 for £95 and, according to a lot of info I read, they last about 3 months if you are lucky, then throw them away and buy another pair... That's £380 a year....!!!!

Anyway PowerfulUK to the rescue, they sell a wrap around for the key battery you use, and a faraday pouch for the spare. You buy it once at £55 and that's it...

I bought one a while ago and can confirm it works exactly as they say, to me it seems a no brainer to prevent relay theft.

I'm not saying this makes an early L405 unnickable but it helps....

This is what you get...

And this is where you get it from

https://www.powerfuluk.com/products/keyfob...amp;_v=1.0

I have no connection to PowefulUK apart from being a happy customer... Pete

A slight word of warning with these and the battery ones as well...

Basically if you have the key in your pocket and you are sat waiting for your Mrs, the key will switch itself off and you have to do a little bum wiggle Shocked Whistle to get it going again to start the car.....

If you leave the engine running and sit still or have the key in the cup holder etc as you pull away it will bong and say "key not found"...

Not a big issue at all but it does get you when the bong of doom alerts you..... Thumbs Up Pete

Stan,

Disabling keyless entry is one way of doing the same thing as these batteries, etc, do...

As I said above I'm not prepared to let the thieving scum dictate what features of my fatty I can use..

I love the keyless entry so don't want to turn it off...

These batteries, and part from Powerful, basically make the key unreadable after it switches off following three minutes of inactivity...

There is an argument that someone can read your key when they are close to you but I don't get close to that scenario so these work for me... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete

Sleeping batteries

Had an unexpected letter today from JLR giving me 2-off free sleeping batteries, delivery in a few weeks Thumbs Up

Looks interesting, not to sure how long the battery will last, but I'll give it a go...

Anyone else received this invite from JLR to receive free sleeping batteries.

AFAIK offer of a sleeping battery was for post 2018 cars

Apparently they don't last much longer than three months and cost £100 a pair, hence using the device above Pete

I got the offer letter today for a pair of batteries, for my 2014 FFRR. I've taken JLR up on the offer.

Well that's good, maybe you slipped through the net as I'm sure it was for 2018 and later cars, maybe they are doing the later ones and then the earlier....

At least they are trying.... Thumbs Up Pete

I had a similar pouch for a while but it became so much of a pain to take the key in and out and it was quite bulky & uncomfortable in the pocket.

Rarely are my car and key in the same vacinity except when I'm at home so we have a cool looking faraday box we drop the keys into when we are home. That seems to be the best compromise for me.

I'd soon get hacked off if the key kept going to sleep whilst I was driving or parked and you had to keep waking it up.

On a similar but different note I'd highly recommend RF protection sleeves for your credit cards, I've used them for a few years now, they get tatty after a bit but work extremely well, I just buy a pack of 10 for a fiver every year or so.

The faraday pouch is for your spare key so no need to be in your pocket all day... I've been using the sleeping battery for several months and only had to wake the key once so it's not a big issue.....

This won't suit everyone it was just a heads up to what's out there... Thumbs Up Pete

Mine has been shipped, so the turnaround was very fast!

I shall try it with an open mind - I would have thought that a vehicle as smooth as the FFRR would cause it to sleep whilst the vehicle is in use quite often, particularly in heavy traffic.

The lifetime of the battery is also of concern.

But I shall try it and see how well it works.

But at £95, it's unlikely I'll be buying any more!

The only time the key has switched off is when I was sat waiting for the Mrs, if the engine is running it won't switch it off...

If you do like it then buy the one in the first post, half the price and lasts forever... Thumbs Up Pete

Had the letter from JLR for 'Complimentary Batteries' come today, I too have a Faraday Box and Pouch, (my safe has the spare key in it which is also a Faraday box).

So in the interests of Faffing about changing batteries at a ludicrous price (but like the keyless entry), I won't be using them, but If I get a pair looking at the price, they maybe up for sale (at a discount of course).

False Awakenings…….

If you’re the type who habitually carries their keys in their pocket, this product may not be ideal, since the battery life will be much shorter. If you habitually use a Faraday device and disable keyless entry, again they offer no additional protection, so a pointless expense: you may as well use the standard batteries.
If OTOH, you leave the keys static most of the time when not using the car, and you don’t use a Faraday device, they could make sense, the cost is a big factor, -but not as big as a replacement vehicle! Embarassed V6 Vogue - “Less is More” - less to go wrong!
