Trans Failsafe Prog

I’ve has an issue with the car for a few weeks. First thing in the morning when I reverse the car it’s become increasingly juddery in reverse for the 1st few meters. This morning it happens again and Trans Failsafe came up on the screen. This dissapered after I put the car in drive. For the next few miles the car drove ok but then became stuck in 1st. The cars a 2003 4.4 petrol, with 67000 miles. I’m assuming the worst a new box, but was hoping someone might have a suggestion where to look 1st or could point me in the direction of a good gearbox specialist, I’m in North London.
Thanks
Tim

You have the ZF 5HP24 transmission

Would be worth checking the fluid level, especially if you have an issue when the transmission is cold that subsequently disappears once it warms up

The TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG message can be caused by a number of things not directly related to the transmission e.g. low battery voltage or a faulty transfer box shift motor potentiometer. The error code should be stored as a P code in the transmission controller, so if you get the codes read this might help with the diagnosis

I’ve never heard of that before. How sure are you that it was 1st gear? The default failsafe gear for the 5HP24 is 4th. The transmission can, however, get 'stuck' in lower gears if the fluid overheats.

Thanks for getting back to me, especially with the box type.
Your right about the gear, it wasn’t 1st as thinking about it I first realised I had a problem when it wouldn’t kick down. I’m going to contact Stephen’s engineering in ware tomorrow to see if I can get it booked in. I’ll order some fluid and see if I can do a level check but I’m in a public car park so it’s not the best of places. One other symptom it has was on the way home [about a mile and half}when it was stuck in gear it started to generate a grinding noise when I powered off almost as if it was getting stuck between gears.
Thanks again
Tim
