Disaster. Broke bolt off on transmission pan. Help.

Was working on a new pan and multiple flushes all day, taking my time, being careful. Went for a test drive. Got back and inspected and it was leaking. Proceeded to re-tork everything. Was tired but I wanted to get it done. For some reason this bolt kept turning with the torque wrench and dumb me just kept turning and it broke off. I have a m5 screw extractor, but it's in a really tough place because of that black bar. My drill will not clear that bar with the length of the bit/extractor. Open to ideas and thx. So freaking defeated right now. I hope I didn't strip the hole. Geesh.

If its not leaking then I'd say dont worry about it.

I believe these are steel bolts. If the bolt kept spinning then the threads are galled up in the transmission housing. When enough aluminum material gets scooped out it jams up against the threads of the bolt and siezes it. If the bolt is thin enough it can break.

It is likely that you'll have to use an insert like helicoil to restore the threads after you get the broken bolt out.

It takes a lot of practice and some good and precise tools to extract broken bolts. If you are not an experienced machinist then my suggestion would be to take it to a capable machine shop if you absolutely must fix that bolt.

Sorry I dont have any better suggestion.

Yeah that's the area it was leaking initially when I tried to tighten it more. Bummer.

I guess I will extract it. And if necessary, get a Helicoil kit.

Or maybe use some RTV on that corner? 2023 L460 Range Rover SE P400

Drop the pan and hopefully you have enough of the bolt exposed to get a pair of locking pliers (mole grips) on and unscrew.

SteveG - This worked. Thx. And thankfully the threads aren’t stripped. I’m off to Harbor freight to get the right tools to torque everything straight. Thx everyone for the help. Great community. 2023 L460 Range Rover SE P400

Result, and good to hear that it wasn’t stripped too. 👍
