Original Headunit CarPlay for $200

Hi All,

Some of you may have seen my post on the Android headunit thread, where I showed this screen installed for around £250 / $340.

Well, in yet another episode of me trusting AliExpress and Alibaba with far too much of my money, I've gone and bought another kit! This one's identical to the UAD unit - original headunit layout, complete with CarPlay, Android Auto, screen mirroring, USB playback, and even composite video in! I believe it supports dual view and single view.

Total cost for this kit delivered was $200, took 9 days to get delivered. I thought I'd make a post so if anyone else is interested, they can follow along. It's roughly £147 so it's a very very lucrative option and has the benefits of all the original unit. I have actually spoken to many sellers now and some are able to source it for as low as $140!

Once it's in, I'll post some photos and the link - don't want anyone buying it before I've confirmed it works!

Time to take the car apart (again)!

Interesting.
Do you not prefer a bigger screen like the one you have already put in?
I’m just curious!

The larger screen is definitely nicer to use, no question - but the Android unit has had its fair share of issues. Occasionally it wouldn't turn on at all, the microphone and calls were hit and miss, and accessing the 360 camera was possible, but a bit of a faff. Plus, no support for the rear entertainment system, which was a shame.

I came back to this step a few times, as I didn't put the ribbon cable in correctly, but on my 4th (or 5th) reassemble of the head unit, it worked!

Only had a brief chance to test it, but I can already hear a clear difference in audio — much better through CarPlay on the standard headunit compared to the Android one. Functions the same as the UAD one, hold end call for a couple seconds and it engages CarPlay.

Now I just need to put the car back together... tomorrow's problem!

Nice to have the complete OEM look. And you have access to the original screen for settings etc.
I have done an accessory screen positioned in the top vents which I am pleased with ( see my thread).
I have had no issues with sound quality. The phone is not perfect so I use the original set up for calls.I can access the original screen also for DAB and hd audio.

But I do like the original look but was put off by the price of them! I will be interested how you get on.

Yeah, I think it definitely looks better with the full OEM look. I saw your top vent screen setup and was actually tempted to go the same route, looks really tidy!

Totally agree on the price - £600 for the UAD kit and £2,300 for the JLR equivalent? No chance. But after chatting with a few sellers on Alibaba and managing to agree on $200, I figured it was worth a punt!

All back to normal now. I’ve only driven about 2 miles since the install, so it’s too early to comment on long-term reliability. That said, I’ve had the car on and off a few times while jumping in and out, and each time the radio has powered up and connected to my iPhone straight away. By the time I’m seated, CarPlay is already up and running.

This is the exact one I purchased, although I did message the seller and we agreed at $200.00 with shipping.

Yes I believe so, looks like the UAD one has a different packaging but otherwise identical.

At that price it's hard to go wrong really!
