TDV8 3.6L – Oil Leak from Bank One Chain Tensioner | |
Hi,
I’ve been chasing an oil leak on my L322 TDV8 3.6L – not the easiest job, given how terrible visibility is in that engine bay.
To get a clearer view, I removed the cooler module to create some working space and thoroughly cleaned the engine to trace the leak. I ran the engine without the V-FAN, and the front crank seal is definitely leaking — and quite a lot. But I also found oil running down from the cylinder head/block area on bank 1. Initially, it looked like a possible head gasket leak.
After a few attempts using a borescope camera, I found the source: the hydraulic chain tensioner on bank 1 is leaking (Impossible to get a view on without a bore scope or turbo pipes off).
Does anyone know the correct O-ring sizes for this tensioner, or has anyone sourced them separately before? (Land Rover only sells the complete part and for 200CHF)

Removing the tensioner isn’t easy, but it's doable. I managed it by removing the intake pipe and the turbo charge pipe, then loosening all 3 screws on the oil return line from the vacuum pump (the line runs over one of the bolts on the tensioner), which gave just enough access — in case someone needs to do this in the future.
To tension the chain tensioner: flip the lock and press the piston into the tensioner. To lock it in place, loosen the 10mm hex on the front — it then locks open for installation like a new one.
