2004 RR HSE 4.4 key won't turn, fuse 18 trick not helping | |
My daily driver US model Range Rover HSE (2004, BMW 4.4l) exhibited the common key-won't-turn issue about two weeks ago. A quick search online showed a handful of established solutions. For the first ten days or so, pulling and re-seating fuse 18 worked fine, and I ordered a fuse by-pass switch with the intention of installing a discreet switch on the dash. Having a hidden kill switch is not a terrible idea here in Albuquerque, NM, which has a very high rate of vehicle theft so I thought that would be an acceptable solution.
Unfortunately, on Friday, pulling fuse 18 ceased to work. The key just will not turn, at all.
I have tried multiple new 10a fuses, so that has been ruled out. I have also pulled and reset all the fuses listed for the immobilizer and steering column interlock.
I tried the drill and WD40 method, and nothing happened. The steering column is not locked, luckily.
I tried applying WD40 to the key hole/ignition barrel.
I have replaced the key battery.
I have tried tapping into the interior lighting power as seen here. No help, although there is an audible click that happens somewhere in the ignition area when the interior lights turn on, still no movement.
.
I checked the voltage on my battery with everything disconnected and it was at 12.2v, so I pulled it and had the store where its under warranty check it and charge it and they insist its good, although it only charged up to 12.35 volts. No change with a charged battery. Obviously, that also means disconnecting and reconnecting the battery after a long period did not help.
Any thoughts on what I might try next?
