P0783 is there a post remedy?

Hello everyone, first time posting looking to see if any advice to be had.

I have an '06 4.2 sc that had just completed an engine rebuild (cracked head). A few hiccups happened along the way, and in the pursuit of trying to get it started, a bunch of resets were done, among which was a transmission adaptation. Turns out it was a case of mistaken cams being installed. Now engine fires up nicely.

Car is now undriveable, slips on every gear at the press of the pedal, and goes into limp mode (one gear) as soon as the chime comes on. Engine light brings up P0783. Clearing the codes gives me a brief use of all gears before it prompty goes back into limp mode.

So after reading a bunch of threads on here (especially comments from RRphil) the concensus is to never do adaptation resets unless the mechatronics are replaced.

So my long winded question is:

-What options do I have to remedy this situation? Not really fancying a total transmission rebuild after just completing the engine rebuild..

That code indicates excessive slip during the 3-4 upshift. This is commonly caused by a worn rear stator bush. The TCM probably previously adjusted the E clutch adaptions to the extreme ends of its range to compensate for the leakage, but when these were set back to nominal the clutch slip is too extreme for the solenoid to get chance to relearn the old settings. Another possibility is that the EDS 4 solenoid itself is faulty.

That’s a tricky one to resolve. You would expect the car to drive okay in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, only throwing a wobbler following the shift into 4th, but you're saying it slips in every gear?

Phil

Hello Phil,

Yes, as the rpms creep up past 2.5k it starts to slip. But the slippage is weird, it slips then suddenly engages the next gear, but smoothly if that makes sense? Not a jarring judder. I believe 1-3 maybe 4. Cant reach 5 and 6 because the bong noise/engine light happens and then I'm stuck in one gear.

I've just come across another thread with the adaptation procedure and I'm slowly attempting it (gotta do it midnight on the highway since its impossible to do it during the day) and it does seem like its working? The bong takes longer to sound and i think 1 and 2 doesnt seem to slip as much anymore. But it might just be in my head.

I want to say its not the stator bush, as it was previously driving fine before the rebuild and before I haphazardly did the adaptations reset. But with the luck I'm having with this car it might very well be 😞
