3.0 tdv6 timing belt replacement

Hi. My 3.0 tdv6 L405 is due an oil service. Mileage is 85k but it is 8yrs old so think it’s due timing belt replacement also. The car is booked with local garage for oil service is it okay to ask them to do the timing belts or should it be a Land Rover specialists? How much would you expect local non LR garage to charge?
Thanks

Definately worth getting it done and I'd use a specialist. It's not a hugely complicated job, but someone who knows what they're talking about will be better. It is also probably worth getting the gearbox oil & filter changed at that mileage too.

I had mine done recently at 85k and 7-years old - and the price does vary a lot from specialist to specialist. There are 2 belts, one a the front and one at the back, and the one at the back you can't really see.

I found prices varied from about £500 to £1000. Including gearbox oil change the quotes ranged from £1000 to £1951. Current:
- 2017 L405 3.0 V6 Autobiography
Sold:
- 2013 L405 4.4 TDV8 Vogue
- 2004 L322 4.4 Vogue (BRC LPG)
- 2002 L322 4.4 HSE (having fixed timing chain guides)
- 2000 P38 4.6 Vogue (BRC LPG)
- 1981 2-door In-Vogue
- 1980 Ex-Army SIII LWB
- 1976 SIII LWB
- 1968 SIIA
Stripped for parts:
- 2003 L322 4.4 Vogue

I paid £780 for the cam belt change using genuine parts at a LR independent specialist.

It’s the kind of job I would want a specialist to do rather than just a general all makes garage.

There is a debate as to whether you should have the oil pump replaced at the same time as a preventative measure and it’s easily accessible while in there doing the cam belt.

Thanks I hadn’t thought of the oil pump. I haven’t had a Range Rover for a few years now, my last one was a TDV8. Thought I would treat myself to another but I do worry about how many I’ve seen suffer engine failures so want to do all I can to avoid disaster.

Similar engine to on my disco.

I got my general garage to do the belts, it’s a pretty standard job but my place is used to LR’s and they do my D4, van, ranger and land cruise. Remember there are 2 belts to do, main belt and the fuel pump belt, so ask for to see the fuel pump belt as it’s a bit of a PITA to get at and is done basically blind (that’s the case on the D4 at least) so can be overlooked. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It’s the fuel pump belt that is the reason why many General garages don’t want to do the job/do it properly. It needs someone who knows how to do it. I think the official line on it is a body off job to access it, which seems crazy if that is the case for a service item.

The body doesn’t have to come off on the D4 to do it, but it is fiddly. The body doesn’t actually come off a 405 as it’s monocoque with front and rear subframes 👍🏻 There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Scotland

Definitely not a body off job, but many garages are scared of taking them on

We do hundreds of them, got it down to a fine art now Wink
