Gearbox problems on day one of 9 week tour

So we are in fatty, off the ferry, heading south towards our first stop for the night in France.

Driving at different, but slowish, speeds, set satnav to avoid motorways…. up to 50mph and an intermittent funny whining noise from under the car, gearchanges odd, very clonky, like a badly worn prop UJ. Sometimes did two changes at once and bangs into gear, not real bad but getting worse and not as it should be, also slight shuddering on constant throttle, similar to a petrol misfiring…

All in all driving very badly...

Tried a restart and no difference, in with the IID and read data, thought it might be an overheating box but the temp was 75degC so not overheating.

I didn't want to but thought I may as well reset adaptions, couldn't go on as it was and nothing else to do...

Box then behaved for 50 miles, nice changes, etc all the way to the hotel, just the odd slightly hard change I guess you get from resetting, but no vibration or whining….

That was yesterday, been driving about 2 1/2 hours today, motorway to town work, not missed a change, seems to be running fine apart from the odd very subtle hickup, again is this down to the reset...?

Any ideas or advice, we are planning a 9 week trip down to Spain and back…. I’m calling it fixed but didn’t think resetting adaptions would make the difference it has..!! It was getting undrivable before. Oil changed at 60,000 miles now done 90,000 miles....

I'd read these 8hp gearboxes were bullet proof...!!

Help needed as I've found it's quite hard to drive with your fingers crossed... Laughing Pete

Pete, are there any signs of fluid on the box? does it look like its lost any?

The boxes are normaly pretty reliable......so here's hoping. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Good shout, I checked it all last week on a ramp and it was bone dry, there were no patches left after being parked all night but I haven't dived under there yet, would have thought low level would have made the remainder of the oil get hot though...!!

It's a weird one.... Pete

Cheers Stan, we are about 4 hours from there, still only got to Le Mans, taking a slow meander south...

Staying in Carcassonne next week in an airBNB... Thumbs Up

Why, what's there....? Pete

Scotland 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

If you need to get a lift to see the underside or do any level checks or top ups, then this is the lad I used when living in France.

Jon Davis
MAREUIL OUEST, LE CLOS ST CYR, 24600 SAINT-MEARD-DE-DRONE FRANCE
0033 681 916 970

He is near enough your way south to be an easy detour.

He is English and VW trained but covers other makes. He was my goto independent whilst living there. A fully equipped setup at his home.

D

Just a thought for you. Good luck John
