Full suspension rebuild?

Hi All!
Despite my 2006 S/C passing its MOT with flying colours last month, with 125k miles, she’s starting to feel slightly vague in the handling department. I have maintained my car no expense spared so far, and I intend on keeping her for many years yet as believe it or not, she’s pretty much rust free as I’ve wax injected and sprayed everything I can get access to! My local garage who I trust, don’t have suppliers on their accounts for the parts to do a rebuild, but are prepared to do the job if I supply the parts. Ideally I’d like all potential wear items like bushes etc replaced, including the sub frame bushes.

So off I trundle onto google to look for suspension rebuild kits…… What a minefield! Some are just bushes, some have arms, some are poly bushes and there must be 10 different manufacturers of all of the above!

Can anyone please offer some good advice about the right kit to restore my handling, get rid of the slight bagginess, and be a long lived and good quality replacement please? I’m pretty good with a spanner myself, but the options have left me clueless! Please bear in mind the sub frame bushes too.
I’ve thought of calling up some of the suppliers I’ve used in the past such as Rimmer Bros etc. and getting their advice, so if anyone has had good experiences with suppliers direct for this sort of advice, I’m happy to hear them too!

Many many thanks in advance for your patience and guidance.
Si.

If shocks are fine, baginess will be down to bushes. The usual culprits are the front lower control arms. Do a search on here and you'll see lots of people very happy with how much more positive the car feels after replacing them and its a relatively cheap fix, IIRC.

Also, check tyres and pressures. Mine came with a somewhat random collection of tyres. Once I was on Conti All Seasons all round with the right pressures, the car handled much better.

Hi, many thanks for your quick response. As I’m hoping to keep the car, I’d like to do the whole lot if I can just for peace of mind and to have that tight, brand new car feeling. Tyre pressures are good, thanks. I check them regularly and run quality tyres too. (Goodyear Eagles currently). I really am looking for advice on the best full replacement kit if there’s one available.
Cheers! 👍 FFRR 4.2SC/KTM 990SMT Current and cherished.

I did mine with Lemforder, who are OEM I believe, as well as some genuine parts. Deffo go for genuine on the subframe mounting bushes.

Thanks Kevin, did you get yours in a kit or separates from a supplier? Who did you use please?

I think I used 'Maltings' for all the seperate Lemforder parts.
I used my local Indie for the Genuine rear upper arms as they were quite cheap and for the 4 Genuine rear subframe bushes.
Very satisfying to drive once they'd all been done even though it seemed to take an age to complete.
I've never used them myself but Autodoc sell Lemforder. Look on 'Sam's Motor and machines' for details.

If it's passed an MOT with no advisories and you don't have clunks and knocks the gains from replacing 'everything' may be minimal and very expensive. A trip to a LR indy specialist may reveal more than the MOT tester after a detailed inspection. Why did you go with Goodyear Eagles? (even if these are SUV/4x4 variants) Given the weight of these vehicles tyre choice is critical as anything that doesn't have a very stiff sidewall will compromise the handling and why most owners opt for something in the LR approved Pirrelli range. I replaced all 4 shocks on mine after 170+ k miles and the improvement in handing was marginal and I was expecting it to be significant. Replacing tyres with 4mm tread with new ( like for like) was very significant and I was expecting it to be marginal. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Awesome! Thanks very much indeed! I’ve used autodoc myself before for an AC compressor earlier this year. They were pretty good to be fair and a great price. They take your chassis number to be sure of the correct part too.

My MOT tester brought it to my attention that it wouldn’t be long before some stuff would need replacing. Particularly the subframe bushes. I figure if all of that is done at the same time this year I can do it at my pace rather than be forced to do it as part of a failure. I’ve had the car for six or seven years and it’s needed very little but I’ve put a fair bit of mileage on it myself. As you say, they are heavy vehicles and all the components have done the same mileage. Fair point about the tyres. Thanks. I went for them for wet weather performance as they are great on other cars I’ve had. They are also due for replacement this year. They were however perfectly fine when new so I don’t think it’s too much of a cause of the mildly wobbly handling. If they get changed at the same time for new ones then I really should notice the difference I’m looking for! 😜👍 FFRR 4.2SC/KTM 990SMT Current and cherished.

I have always fitted F1 Asymetricals on previous cars due to their best in class wet handling and braking but for a 2.7 ton 4x4 I never concidered them a suitable choice. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I’ve done this work on my old 4.2SC and most of it on my 5.0 SC.

On the 4.2 I only used genuine Land Rover bushes but the cost of them recently has gone nuts. Each rear bush is £50 minimum these days.

On the front arm I used a Lemforder bush and changed the bush, on the arm with the built in ball joint I used a Lemforder arm and on tbt ball joint that’s mounted in the hub I used a genuine LR ball joint.

On the rear I replaced the lower wishbone bushes on both sides and had the wishbones powder coated. I used Lemforder bushes. I replaced both bushes in the rear hubs with Lemforder as well.

If doing the upper wishbones, buy the wishbones complete with bushes from JLR as they’re cheaper then replacing the bushes with genuine bushes. I also replaced the rear toe control arms with Lemforder.

You’ll need the car alignment set up properly afterwards so if you’re going to that extent, for all they cost you might as well stick a set of track rod ends on it.

Subframe bushes I would only order from Land Rover. I fitted them to my 4.2.

Think long and hard about it though as to do it right if you’re not doing the work yourself will be an expensive undertaking as there’s a lot of labour involved in it. Especially if you want any rust they find treating as they go.

That, my friend, is awesome info. Thank you so much. Sounds like I have the info to proceed now. One last question that didn’t occur to me until now, is are there subframe bushes to replace on the front too?
In for a penny in for a pound!
Thanks again. I really appreciate all the responses. Super keen to keep her on the road and in the best shape possible.
