Gear Selector - ongoing problems

So, I have a 4.4tdv8 with the rotary gear selector and a few months ago it packed up and would lock in gear - I’ve had it rebuilt twice but it’s gone again. Intermittently locking, luckily in car parks not at traffic lights!

Do I bite the bullet and get a brand new unit or try again with this one - another rebuild would be covered by warranty. Can I fit it myself (which I can do) or would a new unit need to be coded to the car?

Update…. had it rebuilt. Lasted two journeys and got stuck again at the traffic lights. I am losing the will… anyone had similar problems?

Friend of mine has same sort of problem with his 15 plate 3 litre l405, had it rebuilt but wasnt long before it started playing up again but doesnt leave him stranded just wont select park when he pulls up but if he just switches off it applies park brake and it seems to sort its self out when he wants to restart.
