Mohawk, all engines will burn some oil , granted it’s not meant to be loads, but they will burn it. Oil sweeps the cylinder walls and a film always remains after the piston down stroke, which will get burnt in the cylinder. Plus you just have to look at a typical intake of a diesel to see how oily the intake is from egr/, turbo seals etc etc. that still gets drawn into the cylinder as well.

You guys forgot to mention the biggest source of oil getting into the combustion chamber - oil vapors through the PCV system. It also mixes with the soot from the EGR and makes up that sticky sh*t we find in our intakes.

I'll check DPF regen mileage before & after I swap to see if there is any noticeable difference.

This will show you nothing. What you should monitor, is where does the regen procedure end. If you have the DPF totally clean of ash, then the monitored soot concentration would go to 0 and if there is ash present, the regen will stop somewhere above depending on how much ash there is. Because actually it is not soot mass the ECM is monitoring, but the difference between the pressures before and after the DPF and the soot mass is inferred from this. So if all the soot is burnt away, but there is still noticeable pressure difference present, it is because of something else (most probably the ash) causing it. The DPF regen is stopped when pressure difference doesn't decrease at predefined expected rate albeit all the conditions for regen are met.
For example I've been monitoring my 4.4TDV8 since I bought it 6 years and 60 000 km ago at 200 000 km. Then it stopped regen at around 2.5, now it is getting close to 4. So that's still pretty healthy at around 10-15% of the DPF capacity.

So far I've been using Liqui Moly TopTec 4500 5W30 but I'm also considering experimenting with 5W40 C3 and keeping an eye on the above.
