Phobias

Hi Guys
Now I'm a big enough man to come on here and happily tell you all I'm scared of spiders! I'm ok with small ones but tue big hairy Censored scare the Censored out of me. My fear has come from my sister as a child. She was scared of them and it rubbed of on me. Could write about many a story of 3am spider hunting with the hoover because she had one in her room. Now the problem is I have a 19month old son an I don't want him to be scared because of my fear SO I want to face my fear and beat it! Does anyone have any experience of beating a fear? If you did how?
My name is Rob and I'm scared of spider but I don't want to be! [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

vampires and potholing........

Convinced myself the first is not real (finally!), preparing to go caving in the near future.

The only way is to take it head on, as pretlove suggests. Perhaps visit a zoo where you can get close up with the specimens? And take son too! .

Yer I know I need to tackle it head on. My wife's a teacher and has the bug man come in every year so plan to go in the same time and hold a teranchula (sp). I think I would be better with something like that than a garden monster. My son is great with them as he's so young has no fear. No sure it would be good for him to see his old man Censored a brick over a tiny spider? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Switzerland 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

I have a phobia, I'm scared of heights. Not such a problem in the UK, but when I moved to Switzerland it became one. I haven't conquered it, I've just got much better.

When I first came here walking over a bridge was difficult. I had a panic attack on a bus once visiting Hitler's house in Bertesgarten. Very unpleasant. I was like Rain Man when they tried to get him on a plane.

Now I ski everywhere and can drive hairpin bends with sheer drops. I've done it gradually, just pushing the envelope a little at a time. If I pushed too hard it would set me back as I'd loose confidence. I've just got used to it so what scares me is now much higher. I still have a fear of heights, just the height has to be more.

There are still limits. I can't be a passenger in a car. I don't like people near me when there's a drop. Both of these are annoying as people want to help and think someone near and in control is helpful. It's not, it just adds less control to me.

I could never go climbing the Matterhorn or Eiger. Just watching this video scares the $hit out of me. He literally runs up the Eiger in less than 3 hours. Amazing when the first people took 3 days. Terrifying.

There's no logic to a phobia, so it's difficult to use logic to defeat it. I could be in the helicopter and would be ok. I can climb a tree no problem. You're just as dead if you fall 50ft or 5000ft but I'm only scared at 5000ft. I've been scared walking up a mountain, but after getting used to it been fine walking down. I'm sure it's the same with spiders - they're not going to hurt you.

Non phobics don't understand this and you can't explain the irrational fear, but it's very real, uncontrolable and absolutely terrifying.

Kurt is spot on. 1000000's of people can tell you to not be afraid of spiders- that's the whole point of irrational fears your higher brain knows the fear isn't warranted, or helping but it doesn' stop your freckle winking.

Some phobias are rooted in our genetic code- heights for example represent, as Kurt said, a primal loss of control and being outside our comfort zone. I'd actually expand it and say you're just as dead from 6 feet if you land wrong!

Spiders are usually a learned phobia so hopefully can be un-learned. Smarter people than me have spent many hours and lots of money trying to understand why they freak people out. Some people are even ok with tarantulas but hate large house spiders. My g/f's younger sister who is 18 used to pick them up and now someone else has to move them even if they're in the same room! Her story is very similar to yours of late night spider hunts- probably the adrenaline rush and hysteria during the hunt has stayed with you ( I'm convinced it was the her older sisters who induced the phobia)

Confrontation either gradual or staged is the best treatment understanding your phobia is a great start. Anyhow, having waffled on so long I'll just make two more statements

1. Contrary to heights you're not (especially in the north of England) going to be hurt by a spider

2. My best friend who has an IQ over 150, is 6'5" and weighs 18 stone is f@&"£?g PETRIFIED of spiders.

Good luck Rob! Thumbs Up

I'm not keen on spiders, doing the job I do, I'm often up ladders sorting cameras, alarm systems, lights etc, ideal hiding places for spiders. Especially when I'm replacing an external sounder for an alarm.

Worst occasion, up the big ladders, (we have the usual 3 tier ladders that reach to the top of the upstairs window of a normal 2 storey house, and a set of long 2 tier ladders which will easily reach the top of a 3rd storey window.) So , I was right at the top, undone the bolt on the cover of the sounder, lifted the cover away only for a massive spider to drop right in front of my face. This thing was easily the size of the palm of my hand.

I sort of froze on the ladders for a minute, calmly picked up my hammer that was perched on the top rung, took one swing and splattered it against the wall. Wasn't a nice experience.

Most other things I can cope with apart from frogs for some reason, they also freak me out. 2006 Mercedes CLS

Just come for a holiday down under!!! We have spiders big enough to pull a black fella off your missus!!!But, you get used to them, and they beat the hell out of finding a 12-14ft croc in your back yard.

I can imagine the critters you have in Australia, I was in Phuket in Thailand a few years ago, on the steps leading into the bar, there was what I presume, a giant millipede, easily a foot long, I gave it a wide berth just in case, then 2 kids from Oz, no more than 6 or 7 years old started poking it with sticks Laughing

Also, my parents friends moved to Florida a few years ago, they had an Alligator in their pool a couple of years ago. Took 3 blokes the best part of 2 hours to get it out. 2006 Mercedes CLS
