Do you want headrest screens, or the backrest screens?

The backrest ones are a little low, OK for kids tho - and I thought fealt a little "aftermarket" hence LR moving to headrest screens from 2005.

You also hit them every time you find the seats forward if you are tall like me and have the front seats far back.

When my aftermarket screens played up I had a look when the installers came to repair them. From what I can see the headrest screens are much simpler to install than you would think. Firstly the guy removed the back of the seat which came off very simply in 2 sections then removed the headrest screen from the mounting in the headrest (held in by friction) then took the actual headrest off by undoing the velcro between the posts and pulling the cover upwards.

You are then left with the 2 posts which locate into a plastic fitting. The posts are hollow and it looked on mine like part of the plastic was drilled away to make it easier to get the plug and cable through the hole in the top of the post. The cable comes out of the bottom of the posts, down through the back of the seat and is routed to come out of the bottom where (if you move your seats right forwards) there is a big vent in the floor and the ideal place to run the cable over to the rear passenger side of the car. Cables from both rear screens are then run under the trim panels to the rear passenger compartment where the control box for the screens is located. I also have a dvd player there (remote control receiver is just above the rear view mirror so I can control from the front of the car) and we have elected to go with dual channel RF headphones as the kids are still quite small and we had issues with the IR headphones from the Alpine screens. I also have an iPod lead connected to the screens and headphone transmitter, so when on a recent camping expedition all was peaceful in the back of the car as my youngest watched scooby doo on dvd and his older sister watched horrible histories running from an iPad. Meanwhile myself and the wife were able to enjoy an audiobook whilst stuck in traffic on the M6. Twisted Evil

These systems are worth every penny. I am sure I saw a veba system (2xscreens/dvd/dual channel headphones) on the internet for about £250-300 recently.

The most difficult part of installation seems to be cutting the foam to accommodate the mounting receptacle for the screens.

well i dont need the dvd player so just the screens and maybe the ipod input in them as that would free up the one in the front.....maybe this is the way to go then........thanks for your very well detailed reply simon

so next question is what size screens do the vogue headrests take or should i say how big can i go? "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

Mine have 7 inch screens in them, but I assume you would be able to get an 8 inch in there at a push. There are lots around out there and you can pay the earth if you wish. Seems that the cheaper end of the market has 6 inch screens. Found this twin screen set which seems reasonable.

The DVD player in my car is by the same manufacturer and you can get these screens bundled with dvd players and headphones for about £80-100 more than just the screens alone. If you want a name like alpine or panasonic etc then you are going to have to pay a little more.

If I didn't have RSE already fitted, I would opt for 2 iPads fitted to the rear. They are far more versatile and can be removed and used indoors etc.

Just a thought. Current MY2020

To be honest this is what I had in the back of my sport. Griffen do a seat mount case and then you just need headphones with a long lead. The vogue I bought had the rear screens already so I patched the iPads into that system. Also has the advantage that we can plug our iPhones into it if there is a film on them that the kids want to watch as well.
