Don't mess with the big boys..............

I love my sailing as well as working on the sea but the skipper of this yacht deserves everything that came his way at Cowes week this year. One thing for sure his insurance won't pay out.........................

silly 'landlubber' question, but why was the tanker steaming through the sailing boat thingy...

Because it was on it's way to it's berth in Southampton Water and the sail boat event is not supposed to hamper the progress of a power driven vessel that can only navigate within the deeper water channel. Having transited the Solent many many times the tanker was also passing the Prince Consort buoy and about to start a very difficult turning manouvre.
Additionally, all craft in the Solent are aware that there is a moving safety zone 500m each side and behind of these big vessels and 1000m ahead, you can be fined £50,000 and sent to prison for entering the safety zone................
The tanker isn't that huge, but had he left the buoyed channel I think there would have been an outcry at the 70,000 tonnes of oil he would be carrying had it spilled.................... 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

He was so Censored lucky he didn't go under the bow and all hands lost. .

The tanker would just be working up to full manouvring speed to get round the tight bend off Calshott - don't forget that at less than 4 knots (6mph) these big ships cannot steer and bow and stern thrusters are useless at that speed too. I can assure you that as soon as the bridge team on the tanker lost sight of the sail boat under their bow the engine will have been stopped, she would still have taken a couple of miles to stop even at that speed................. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

thanks tim..seeing these ships from a distance it doesn't look like they go very fast but up against those sailing boats in the video you can appreciate their speed..

oops, perhaps he was remembering that power gives way to sail, with no consideration to rule9(b) or 18(b ii).
Very luck not to have lost the hull.
Years ago I remember a Chief telling me that from slow ahead to stop the vessel we were on would travel approx 4nm just for the gearing to locate.

The last really big ship I sailed in last year I could fire the engine astern when the ship was still doing 17 knots ahead..........
now the propellor which is 125tonnes and 9.6m diameter had then to overcome the momentum of 159,000tonnes of ship and cargo's momentum. The computer controls of that very modern engine could get from 74RPM ahead (17 knots - full sea 94rpm and 27 knots) to running at 25 rpm astern in 27 secs, no gearbox, direct drive, reversable engine by changing over a cam. The problem then was overcoming the momentum. I had to do it once and missed another ship in the Singapore Straits that had not complied with Traffic Control Instructions and crossed ahead of me when he was instructed to pass astern, by 5m.....................I am now sailing in a 56,000 tonne ship - it's like driving a Lotus Elise after a juggernaut. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Tim who do you work for?
My father used to be chef engineer for Bank Line.
I used to be a fisherman and if we were steaming we went astern but if we were fishing we had very little control where we went with the net out.
