TDV8 Vogue - Key in ignition, turn, 'clunk' from engine bay but no start.

I can hear what sounds like the starter relay engage, but nothing else. Turning off and on again usually resolved the problem. This has happened almost every time I go to start the car in the past couple of weeks. Yesterday, I had to turn the key off/on three times to get the engine started.

I'm guessing either a duff starter motor or just a slightly loose cable in that region. Anyone else had this issue?

Sounds like a sticky starter.

In the old days you could put the car in gear and rock it which would free it.

could be a loose cable on the starter or solenoid. We have this frequently on tractors. If the cable terminals are not tightened down fully, there is enough power getting through to engage the starter and give a jolt, but not enough through the contact to turn the engine - on a tractor you can wiggle the contacts and turn the key and it always works, bit more difficult on a RR unless you have really really long arms or a handy passing monkey who will oblige
