Correct, sadly you can't get access through the holes.
You may be able to undo it with an Allen key on the spindle, but I couldn't budge it. |

| Lever them out - there are two or three metal clasps holding them securely which makes it quite tight to remove. Plastic tool, gently work your way around, but ultimately it needs some force! |
