The genuine solution involves using the TV antenna in the glass, and a splitter that provides a seperate connection.

If you are retrofitting the heater remote then you wont have that connection. ...

To conclude this for anyone who has a similar issue in the future, I've no idea what caused the fault but it was cured by replacing the heater control panel.
