4.4TDV8 “SUICIDE” Hesitation, Good INDY Specialist Req

I’ve had my 4.4 for nearly six months. It’s only done 54K. I paid good money for it, from a good LR Garage locally. They did loads of work to it before I took delivery, New Discs front and back, pads, two calipers, air suspension pump, fuel tank pump, and sender unit, starter motor, battery, all the oils, yes ALL of them. New gearbox filter, full service. I achieve an overall average of 28.3 mpg. On a run I’ve had 39. It is a fabulous vehicle. But it has a dark side. Three times now, I’ve nearly been wiped out, by either turning right in front of oncoming traffic, or left into traffic. At first, it goes then, it’s like all brakes go on, and i depress the accelerator much more, and probably two seconds later, we’re off at a million miles an hour. It’s almost as if it’s trying to go into limp mode, but then it sorts itself out, and we’re off. I had a 3.6 before, and it too had the odd hiccup, but nothing like this. The 3.6 would just come up with engine system fault, it would quickly disappear, and everything back to normal.
Got to admit, I’m a bit of a nerd and change the oil/filter religiously at 2500 miles, always use quality fuel.
Nothing appears on GAP iid…. Zero fault codes.
I’ve been back to the dealer, and they cannot find anything wrong with it.
Spoken to others, and it appears it is definitely a thing!!
Interestingly, I cannot get it to do it when in command shift.
So….
Any ideas greatly appreciated, and also a really good reputable INDY Specialist.
I live in Bristol, but more than willing to travel to get it sorted!

All torque converter and turbo set ups will have a tad delay whilst everything engages and gets you going.

The hesitation to me sounds like something intake related or fuel filter related. There's very few unknown problems on the 4.4 TDV8. First port of call would be to grt a T20 bit and remove the screw and pop out your MAP sensor. Takes a few seconds to do and will tell you a lot.

They need cleaning every 1,000 miles or so (spray with electrical contact spray or brake cleaner and clean the chamber with a bit of kitchen roll). I would also have a good look around the hoses at the top of the engine bay and look for gunky soot-like substances.

Next thing I'd check is when the fuel filter was last changed.

Extremely rare on a 4.4 TDV8, but worst case could be the timing slightly out for whatever reason. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I’ve got some CRC cleaner, so will pop both sensors out, and give them a clean.
I’ve had a cursory look around the hoses, and all is fine. There’s no smoke from the turbos, and I regularly give it a good 30-40 minute run for the DPF. Bloody things! I just blanked both EGR’s off on my 3.6, & generally it ran like a dream. The 4.4 I find a much nicer, smoother & quieter engine….. just choked half to death with all this eco crap!!

Are you sure it’s not just the gearbox pulling away in 2nd then they pause is when it drops to 1st?
Have you tried S mode when you want to pull away quickly?

Mine does the same Si and it's very annoying especially when I'm trying to get in a 'gap' in the traffic flow. I try and put a few gentle revs on just before the launch into the gap which seems to help. When I've got time I'm taking mine to a local ZF gearbox specialist who is going to map what the torque convertor is doing.

as you mentioned that the fault won't happen when in command shift mode.... maybe a quick free 'prove' might be to reset the gearbox adaptations. so it learns a new driving style. -in normal mode, and see if it repeats... i can't remember the method, but it must be on here somewhere. some cars you do a sequence of pedals and buttons to reset it, and it takes about 200 miles to relearn. -a free go at a problem, that might get flagged at your chosen indy, and only you can 'drive it out'

The MAP sensor is on the top of the engine intake - the MAF sensors on the airboxes never need cleaning. 30-40mins for a run to clear the DPF or activate a regeneration is not long enough IME. Mine has instant and smooth power with no hesitation and it's nudging 170k miles now and still has the 'eco crap' fitted. As yours is a very low miler it would also offer the possibility that it's just done very small trips all it's life which will not have been kind to it. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Resetting the gearbox adaptations involves a diaghnostic tool like the GAPIID but is not recommeneded unless you have changed internal components. You can reset the throttle by holding down the accelerator to the max limit and then powering up the car for 30 seconds then powering down and releasing the pedal. This can smooth out gear changes IME. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Beware of ressetting things, you could unleash a whole wold of problems. This sounds like it's just a characteristic that you can probably drive around with S or manual mode.

You can't unleash any problems doing a throttle reset. It's helped on my L322 and my previous Audi ( which had a ZF box) 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I reset my adaptations and it made things a whole lot worse for nigh on a thousand miles. Don't do it!
