clonk from suspension

Your advice is needed

2004 v8 is making clonking noise from suspension (front) when turning left or right. Thus far everything on the front suspension has been replaced but the noise is still there

What else can it be Big Cry

the search function [with instructions how to use] is there in addition to the OP being able to scroll down and flip a few pages to find threads with the same subject.

OP probably did search for 'clonk' hence my suggestion of clunk and the link .... ... - .- -.

compliance bush on ffrr

where one find the compliance bush on the range rover and any idea how to set/replace it - apparently it contributes to the clunking noise [/u]

Are you sure its not the drop links. Cheap and easy to change, don't even need to jack the car up to change them? Reformed

Front suspension consists of bottom balljoints, drop links, anti-roll bar 'D' bushes, compression links and transverse links


Never heard of a compliance bush and can only think it's a mechanic getting his bushes mixed up. It could be the bushes in the compression links or transverse links

thanks for the reply. thus far we've replaced drop links, lower arm bushes, tie rod ends, etc. the only things on front suspension that has not been replaced are the struts and shocks[/url]

2002 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Zermatt Silver

The bush that connects the tie rod to the subframe is a compliance bush (see microcat) and is located just below the height sensor -it is a round bush with an asymetric core. If it is not aligned correctly, movement of the lower arm, instead of being absorbed by the bush, cause the inner and outer parts to touch hence the clunk.

This has to be slackened to do the diff mod, and at least on mine, was not correctly tightened when it was tightened - it must be tightened with the weight on the wheel, but is much easier to tighten with the wheel hanging down on a lift.

To see if this is the issue, compare both sides as the diff mod only required one side to be slackened. Look at where the inner part of the bush is contacting the outer part - the maximum rubber should be in a horizontal plane, but if tightened with the wheels in the air, it will be pointing up at 45 degrees, leaving less rubber to absorb shocks.

The bolt that retains it is tightened to 165 Nm = 90 Degs if I remember correctly, and it can often be fixed just by slacking it with the weight on the vehicle - you will here a clunk as it rotates to the correct position, but beware, it is very hard to tighten without a pit!

Perhaps this is not the problem!

Two quick questions which may help:

1. Before changing anything, were the bushes aligned and touching in the correct axis (you can see the contact point on the bush)?

2. Did the bushes rotate when you released the torque with the vehicle weight on the wheels, particularly if the answer to 1 was that the contact point was not in the axis of the bushing?

suspension clonk, or rather clunk, gone

eventually the clunk has disappeared. solution to the irritation, loosening and tightening the subframe as well as all joints and bushes with the car on all 4 wheels on the ground and, voila clunking gone.

the cause of the problem - replacing the bushes and other suspension parts whilst the car was on a lift with wheels hanging
