I wouldn't say our refinery is better than others. I would guess the big thing would be the forecourt storage. There all open vented tanks so moisture can very easily get in there. The stuff the supermarkets buy are all stored I would imagine in the same tanks. I don't know the specifics of contracts etc but can't see each customer having their own tank for storage. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Both the TDv8's I have owned ran noticeably quieter, smoother and about 2-3 mpg better on Shell and BP regular diesel than on the local Sainsbury's stuff. The 2.2lt 4 pot in the Evoque doesn't mind what it gets fed, it runs well on any of them, regardless of brand though it still gives worse economy than it should!. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

On tank storage, in hydraulic tanks one usually uses breather with desiccant in it to keep the hydraulic oil clean (major cause of damage in hydraulic systems). I can imagine that cheaper storage tanks won't have proper breathers or the desiccant is not used or doesn't work anymore (not changed in time). This causes moisture to be drawn in due to temperature differences (the tank "breaths") the condenses in the tank, especially when the fuel levels are low. That water mixes with the fuel and problems start.

And that is without someone adding water on purpose.

And then there is of course the filling of the tank, where water can get in, or with underground tanks that ground water or rainwater gets in due to bad caps/breathers/valves etc. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Without sounding stupid, would Esso count ?

Have one of those fairly near, but can't think of a Shell or BP, but then again, I wasn't looking out for one.......

May have to use the old web to see what non-supermarket is nearest.

Always used supermarket fuel, but will try alternatives now.

The nearest Shell or BP to your local supermarket will probably try to price match. Those in our part of Hertfordshire do so best of both worlds....

ESSO & Texaco etc should also be OK but I reckon Shell & BP are the best on addatives that help MPG & Engine fitness.

Another vote for BP or Shell for both petrol and diesel. Both the SC FFRR and 928 feel smoother on their higher premium fuels. Haven't noticed and detectable difference in our Clio diesel commuter, but have had three separate instances over the last couple of years ago when using supermarket diesel of water contamination shortly after filling up.

Don't have any supermarkets with fuel near us, so the local BP is expensive Sad 2006 Supercharged

New season of 5th Gear last night (now on Sky Discovey) did a fuel test using a Golf GTI (petrol & turbocharged) of various different fuels. Can't remember all the details, but cehapest fuel was Asda 95, most expensive was Shell Optimax, with the Shell giving 5bhp more (235 vs 240). 2006 Supercharged

If it was a mk6 gti then it's supercharged and turbocharged.
My wife has got one and I don't notice any difference on power etc where we buy our fuel but from now on i think I'll stick to the bp

Saw that. Much better now its an hour long again (well, 42 mins).

Quite interesting, but only seems to show what these tests have shown for years, you pay a bit more and get a bit more power.

The Golf was a TSI.

When I ran my M5's I used both supermarket and premium fuels, and found the car to run smoother and a bit more throttle response with the premium fuels, but it was very subjective.

Prob the only thing that'll make me put Esso in the Td6 is if any fuel savings cover the extra cost per litre.

Shell and BP garages are miles away........ 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

For ages ive been buying morrisons fuel, for my £5 voucher, however ive now moved my place of work which involves driving past a Shell Station. As the shell fuel was the same price i thought i would give it a go.

To be Honest i couldn't tell the difference neither did it make any change to my fuelly results.

So im back collecting my £5 vouchers.

I didnt try the super fuels, only the 95 RON Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.

I dont have an Esso garage nearby but I'd certainly use an one as opposed to any supermarket fuel. I'm doing an awful lot of miles in a week & am fueling up every second day. I cant feel any difference in the performace on the supermarket fuel but as I've stated its the MPG that shows exactly what is happening. The MPG gauge is on the screen constantly, that why I noticed the difference. In my FFRR the driving varies so much that I hadn't noticed any real difference, but I will not put supermarket fuel back into my FFRR.
The only way I'll know what effect it has on the FFRR is when towing our twin axle caravan (1830kg) & I know that on supermarket fuel I get 20MPG when towing, so I'm looking forward to trying that with my new found information.

not super useful for you guys, but there's probably a similar list available for UK:
http://www.toptiergas.com/index.html
I use Conoco exclusively. There's a crap-load of Conoco stations around here.

I filled up the FFRR the other day, $92!
(56.82GBP)

That's expensive for US; it was close to $4 per US gallon.
So, 2.47GBP per US gallon, or 0.65 per liter.

I guess I should probably just shut up now, huh? Whistle Jim
