Upgrade List wrote:

Upgraded Sonnax Valve Block
Upgraded Sonnax Oil Pump

Ok So far we all know that the valve block should be upgraded if possible to the uprated Sonnax valve block.

Are there any other upgrades bar normal maintenance that should/could be done?

Possibly a longer 5th gear or final drive ratio to decrease cruising RPM and thus increase MPG?

An upgrade that can make it lockup quicker at all?

Im guessing RRPhil is the best person in the know about these gearbox's Smile

Just interested as per my WTD add there isn't anything wrong with mine (TOUCH WOOD!) but i'd like to strip down a box just incase and see about upgrades and the valve block is first but anything i can do to improve its use ability would be great and a better and quicker lockup function would be much better i think Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

When I got quotes from suppliers who did the Sonnax upgrade, one mentioned a Sonnax oil pump. Theirs had the Sonnax valve block and oil pump fitted for £1495 +VAT and £500 exchange surcharge on your old box. That was supply only. You'd have to get the box fitted yourself. Just to give you an idea of prices.

I have also read about the clutch plates being upgraded.

A taller 5th gear would be useful......as you say.

If you look hard you may be able to find an upgrated Torque converter as well as this is where some of the problems come from. The disintergration of the plates in the T/C. Someone over here was going to build a modified T/C

I had a couple of emails from Mackies, but there were conflicting warranty information for the torque converter ;

Morning mark

The cost to recondition both transmission & torque converter is £1850.00+vat,

We fully recondition your transmission & torque converter to manufacturers specifications including the sonnax valve/body upgrade and all this is done here at our premises mark,

We recondition your torque converter in house and it has a life time warranty,

Yes mark you need to replace the transmission oil cooler 100% as the fine metal lodges inside and it is impossible to get it all out, so best to replace it,

Hope this helps you to decide mark.

then ;

Mark

Sorry I forgot to mention in my e-mail that if we do the complete job at a cost of £2642.63+ vat it comes with a three year warranty (parts and labour), if we supply the exchange transmission only then it has a 1 year warranty on the transmission & torque converter only.

Kind regards
John.

Well machines have said that an upgrade to the gearing isn't possible and that an upgraded torque converter isn't available.

Going to get a price on the sonnax valve block and oil pump upgrade tomorrow but they have said I'd need specialist tools to do the work on the vale body an oil pump.

It's a shame I can't upgrade the gearing in it Sad
They have confirmed that the zf boxes used on the tdv8 are much stronger and regular oil changes should make them last a long long time Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
