You got it all wrong Stan, it's not a time for getting conned into spending enormous amounts of money on booze , food and presents, it's a time to be generous and give enormous amounts of money, booze , food and presents to forum members.

I choose to ignore the commercial side and instead concentrate on the things I like, such as the way the house looks after we decorate it, the excitement on my children's faces, the cooking (I love cooking Christmas dinner!!!!!!!!!!), the wine and the merriment and the atmosphere.

I like buying my family presents, in truth. I like the carols and the way the family comes together and we all celebrate what we believe in.

Christmas Eve, my son and I prepare for Father Christmas's arrival by lighting a huge log fire and sorting his mince pies and single malt. We get carrots for the reindeer and, after the orphans are in bed, asleep, we set the stage for FC's arrival with mock footprints in the lounge from the fire to a settee where his food and drink are. We put reindeer food in the garden and, often, the malt glass out there as well. Works every time!!

I love the magic of it all. The tradition. The way we do things that aren't done at any other time of year.

I agree that the commercialism has gone far too far, but I don't dwell on that. It doesn't HAVE to be expensive, but it's time off work and with good family and friends. I love mulled wine, too. And mince pies (I make those myself and we make the cake) and all the other bits that make that time of year so unique.

I have a great photo from last year of my father-in-law roasting chestnuts on one of our open fireplaces with my son and baby daughter looking on. The rich, warm glow from the fire. Their excitement and the whole togetherness of it all. That sums it up for me.

So I say 'bah humbug!' to the Bah-Humbugs. Laughing Si. <This is my name.

He doesn't know that yet. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wink

It'll all start again in a year or two when my baby daughter cottons on. By then, I'm sure my son will have sussed it and he'll be in on the secret to foil her for as many years as possible.

We love the way their faces light up at Christmas! We were told that young children bring the magic back and it's true. I get to re-live the 70's (the best decade ever!) when my age was still in single figures. Si. <This is my name.

Love that.

I decided we would be having a quiet time this year, just me , the wife, daughter & my folks.......
..........wife decided she couldn't leave anyone out, we are now up at 16 for dinner! Oh well, I do like the challenge, get most things prepped the day before, might just go for turkey crowns for convenience. Must admit it's one of the few occasions everyone is in the same place, cannot be a bad thing. (until someone gets too pished and falls out with someone) Thumbs Up
