this is from the wiki and it refers to the td6 but i'm sure yours will be the same,

Additional Heating

On Td6 models, additional heating reduces the heater warm-up time and is also used to maintain heater performance throughout the drive cycle.

FBH is triggered automatically to help coolant warm-up for quicker cabin heat.

sounds like the FBH Mick, if it is not working and its cold it could still be trying to fire up and feeding fuel to the burner, which isnt igniting properly leading to the smoke.

I was getting smoke from mine before i had it changed, and masses from the new one until it burned off. Can you see exactly where its coming from? Exhaust from the fbh is under the passenger foot well. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

FBH will work at a certain temperature regardless of whether you set timer or press remote.
Think it's below 5 or 6 degrees.
Almost certain there is a post on here that lists the conditions when the car will decide it needs to supplement the heating with no user action.
Mine does this on short journies and the smoke comes from left wheel arch.

I was worried at first but I heard the FBH running.
Maybe your FBH has decided to work again now were in 'British Summer Time'....
Had it, loved it!

Under warranty, but really you need to be sitting down when they give you the bill. They are the best part of £1500 to get swapped. Thud There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

With such a short commute it doesnt give the time for the engine to warm through, and the fbh will try to give a boost to the engine coolant temp, so would be running when you start it and when you turned it off, if it were working that is..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Will probably be the fbh. if its def not working then the good thing is its trying to work so will more than likely just be the glowplug. i replaced one on my eberspacher, similar to webasto, and was about £30ish. not an expensive fix if you can do it yourself Thumbs Up '04 td6 se

On a cold day the FBH will come on without your intervention. Not pressing the remote or not programming the timer makes no difference.

It is designed to warm the engine, and has the convenient side effect of being able to heat the cabin. Ask D3 owners!
