Locking Rear Diff

Has anyone specified this option on their car? Is there any reason you would want it other than for hard core off road driving?
I have it on my current car but not sure it has ever had much effect in the type of driving I do. I am inclined not to spec it.

It can only be locked on a slippery surface or when going in a dead straight line.

I did, on the advice of my brother-in-law who used to design F1 cars. He reckoned it was a worthwhile enhancement for on road driving. Obviously I can't identify any benefit/intervention in day to day driving but I feel happier knowing it is there (and it was a tiny percentage of the overall vehicle cost).

Why would you think that? On the road it should tighten the line under power.

Is it variable or limited slip in a way that the standard diff isn't ?

I thought it was just a straight lock - so when engaged it locks the rear wheels at the same speed - in which case it can only be used on a slippery surface or when both wheels need to move at the same speed ie a straight line.

It's a computer-controlled variable LSD - the locking/pre-loading is done by an electric motor.

I can see the point of having a LSD in a performance car to aid traction out of corners and off the line etc. but I don't really plan to be power sliding my Range Rover or doing drag starts and my off road driving is limited to parking in fields so I think I will give this option a miss.

In the general scheme of things and the way the weather is in this country I personally would plump for it but leaf not forget the self parking is then lost... But that's due to change this year or next iirc Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I have not personally tested the park assist but I have heard that the space it requires to actually work in is so large that unless you are absolutely hopeless at parking you would find it very easy to park on your own anyway.

The active Diff also worked with the torque vectoring when cornering in the wet which gives more stability and of course more grip. Far to many gone...
