Mid life crisis? Old Porsche 944. What else?

I must be having some sort of meltdown, but having resisted the urge to stretch myself and buy a DB9 (I've decided instead to keep the Range for at least another 6-12 months) I think I want a cheap, old sports car to go with it.

Budget is about £4k ish. I don't want anything modern - ideally I'd like something 20 plus years old - maybe even older.

I'd like something British, German or Italian - something with some heritage / history or that at least has something interesting about it. Would like something with a bit of poke - this'll be a sunny day B-road tool - so it needs to be fun to drive.

Doesn't have to be mint, just mechanically sound - I'll quite enjoy sorting out the odd cosmetic issue here and there.

I've seen a white 1989 Porsche 944 S2 (the later 3.0 model) with 135k on the clock which is up for £3995, with the awesome retro burgundy pinstripe interior that I'm going to look at (pics below) but what else could I consider? Question

Any suggestions welcome...

Porsche 944. Smile Nice choice. Especially if you could find a convertible.

Others that come to mind...

Alfa GTV6
BMW 330
BMW 635Csi
Audi TT
VW Corrado G60

Or, a Jaguar XJS...? Graham

Thanks Stan - I had seen Craig's car. Have had 2 Boxsters before and loved them both. Want something I've not owned before though really...

SL500 was another consideration.

Another Very Happy beautiful thing. Proper engineered Merc, probably near rock bottom pricing now too, before they start going silly. Graham

A1GGS - I like your thinking!

Personally, I prefer the coupe 944s. Something a bit too 'bath tub' about the 'verts - plus on a car that age I'm sure you'd be fighting a constant battle with leaks and noise with a soft top!

I missed out on a 3.0 V6 Alfa GTV Cup as it needed a new clutch and I dithered for too long...should've snapped it up for the money the guy wanted for it.

A G60 Corrado was my first 'proper' car, that was great fun...until a TNT artic drove into the side of it.

I'd consider a XK8...although (typically) the one I'd really want would be the XKR and I'd need to up the budget for that.

I can see me being quite unproductive at work over the coming weeks.... Past (too many to list, but a few favs)...

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Zermatt Silver

I seriously toyed with buying a 944 / 968 a few years ago.

What's not to like? German build, great looks, rwd, light, small, good handling, torquey engine, cheap-ish to maintain, almost depreciation-proof....

Well, no V8. Umm... yes, that's about it.

The SL500 is more of a GT than a sports car, so it depends what you want. I imagine the 944 would be far more fun to drive, but the SL maybe more long-term satisfying and Mercedes V8's are practically bullet-proof, whereas the Porsche 4-pot needs work at this kind of age and mileage if not already done. Si. <This is my name.

I eat rat poison.

A man ain't truly been insulted until he stands buck naked in front of a woman and she didn't even notice. Or care.

I've been looking for a cheap-ish XKR. This one's above your budget but has been advertised for well over a month. Lovely colour. Make him an offer. I wouldn't be put off so much by the mileage given the FSH. It must've had the cam chains done.

How about an old 964 or a 928? I did think about a 968 myself once upon a few years ago.

How about an out of left field suggestion - lancia Delta Integrale? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

I lusted after a Lancia Delta as a kid.

Parts and servicing costs put me off one now - Jag and Porsche bits are pretty easy to come by, Lancia (I'm guessing) probably not so much... Past (too many to list, but a few favs)...

There will be other deals, although black exterior and interior seems quite rare - no idea why. I'm holding out for when the 4.2's go down a bit in price, by which time I'd have probably changed my mind.
